Ford on track to beat Toyota with best-selling car

(AP) ? Ford Motor Co. says its Focus small car is on track to become the best-selling car in the world this year, trumping the Toyota Corolla.

Ford sold 489,616 Focus sedans and hatchbacks worldwide in the first half of 2011. That was almost 27,000 more than the perennial best-seller, the Toyota Corolla.

Ford made the announcement at its assembly plant in Rayong, which opened in May to build the Focus. The Thailand plant, which is one of Ford's most advanced, has the capacity to produce 150,000 cars per year for sale in Thailand, Vietnam, Australia and other countries in the region.

Ford's recently revamped Focus is sold in more than 100 countries worldwide. It's a strong seller in the U.S., where Focus sales were up 31 percent in the first half of the year compared with 2011. But the Corolla is still king in the U.S., where it outsold the Focus by nearly 27,500 in the first half of the year.

The Corolla could still top the Focus worldwide, too. Last year at this time the Focus was ahead of the Corolla, but the Corolla pulled through in the end, outselling the Focus by more than 259,000 vehicles.

At the plant Friday, Ford executives were also celebrating the production of the 350 millionth vehicle Ford has made since its founding 109 years ago.

Ancient Bugs Trapped In Amber Discovered In Italy

Bugs In Amber

The world?s oldest arthropods ? invertebrate animals that include crustaceans, arachnids and insects, have been discovered in Italy, perfectly preserved in amber like a scene right out of Jurassic Park.

The discovery was made in the northeastern part of Italy and includes one fly and two mites that were trapped in millimeter-scale droplets of amber.

Researchers estimate that the 100 million year old arthropods are the oldest discovered to date.

The full study was published in the?August 27?edition of the?Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences?and scientists hope it will help them gain a better evolutionary understanding of how organisms on earth have become so complex over the last 100 million years.

David Grimaldi, a curator in the American Museum of Natural History?s Division of Invertebrate Zoology, tells?Science Daily:

?Amber is an extremely valuable tool for paleontologists because it preserves specimens with microscopic fidelity, allowing uniquely accurate estimates of the amount of evolutionary change over millions of years.?

Arthropods are believed to have existed for the last 400 million years but until now the oldest amber discovered was just 130 million years old and did not include arthropods.

The amber droplets range in size from 2-6 millimeters long and were discovered in the Dolomite Alps. Researchers?Eugenio Ragazzi and Guido Roghi of the University of Padova along with their team of helpers analyzed 70,000 droplets for inclusion into their research, a massive study that left to the discovery of three arthropods.

According to the group two mites species known as?Triasacarus fedelei?and?Ampezzoa triassica?have been discovered.

Researchers will now spend their time analyzing the samples to learn more about the period in which they lived.

Sherry Perkins: A Lesson in...Screenplays

Okay, right off the bat, what is a screenplay? It's a movie in written form. Everything is different when writing a screenplay versus writing a novel: format, description, narration, action, number of pages. Unlike a novel, where words flow down the pages in paragraph form, a screenplay is tight writing with the dialogue down the center of the page posted under the character speaking. Small scene set ups (descriptions) are written to tell the reader where the action is taking place. In my research, I found out that a minute on the screen equals about one page of text. So, for that two-hour movie, the screenwriter had to come up with a 120-page script. You can find all you need to know on the Internet or in books, except of course for the words. You'll have to come up with those. They even sell screenplays on online auction sites if you'd like to see what a professional one looks like.

Now that you've written that next masterpiece, you know the one where you receive the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, what do you do with it? How does it go from the page to the movie screen? Not that I'm a professional, but I can tell you the path I've followed.

First, you have to draft a pitch. This is comparable to a novel pitch, where you have one page to catch the producer's/agent's/manager's attention. In this pitch you have to contain a lot of information in a short space. For example, the title of your story, what it is comparable to in films, and the meat and potatoes (main character, conflict, the goal of the main character, and how he/she will get to the goal, plus who the story would appeal to (the audience). I've pitched to producers many times. Although most have passed on my story, with some giving me great feedback, others have requested the screenplay -which still hasn't gone anywhere but that just makes me work harder. After the pitch hooks the reader, he or she may instead request a treatment. A treatment is more thorough and contains more information than you can put on one page. Again, you can research on the Internet about treatments.

Why am I telling you this? Because I've written four screenplays (with two in progress), haven't bought the fancy script-writing software that is available since I can type it all out in Word, and have pitched to producers on my own. It all started years ago by watching stupid, boring, lame, (and any other derogatory adjective you want to use) movies. I told my husband, "I can write a better story than that," after watching something so stupid we eventually turned it off and I don't even remember the name of it. Yet, Hollywood continues to roll out lame blockbusters which makes you question the entire process. (Is it really who you know?) Perhaps I'm trying too hard, at least that's what my husband says. But, I believe in my heart one day my story will end up on the screen, probably jumbled into the same category I just ranted about above. Yet, if other idiot writers can do it - so can I because I'm NOT an idiot writer. (Yes, I'm jealous can't you tell.)

To help you better visualize a pitch, I'm including an actual pitch below. This was sent to a Paramount Producer about a month or so ago. For confidentiality, I will not list his name. It's not perfect, but at least I had to courage to send it. Who knows what lights the fire under these people, but you never know until you try. If you were a movie producer, what would you think about this? The format may be lost in copying and pasting, but I think you'll get the idea. Oh, and I'm not worried about someone stealing my idea. We all have ideas. When we convert our ideas to a tangible written form is when it's protected. All of my screenplays have been registered. Research copyright and registration on the Library of Congress website.

Intentionally stripped of job, home, friends, and money, can Ellis survive homelessness and receive his inheritance or will he fail and lose it all?
My name is Sherry Perkins and I've written a character-driven spec titled "Finding Ellis" that I'd like to send you. It is comparable to Trading Places meets The Pursuit of Happyness. After his mother?s death, Ellis Vandabright lacks discipline, leadership, and compassion. He shirks work responsibilities and has grown into an adult spoiled brat despite his father?s guidance. Desperate for Ellis to change, Ellington presents a proposition. To receive his inheritance, Ellis must prove himself worthy by living homeless for two years. If he breaks any rules of no coming home, no asking friends for help, and no going to the bank, he loses it all. On the streets with no friends, money, or resources of his own, Ellis is completely lost. He gets arrested for disturbing the peace on his first visit to a soup kitchen for a meal. Later, he finds shelter in an abandoned building and is even mugged and beaten up. When he befriends a waitress his heart softens. Knowing he has the power to help the unfortunate, if he can make it to the end, he forms a plan. With a transformed soul and renewed spirit, he dreams of building a place for the homeless. Yet without resources, how can his dream materialize? If he approaches the bank for money all bets are off. With only ninety days left on the streets, does he turn his back on the desperate when both their time and his time are running out? When faced with the choice of forfeiting his millions to help them before his deadline or turning his back on them to help himself, what will Ellis do? Audiences love to see rich spoiled brats get what they deserve; which is what happens in the beginning. Yet, audiences will ultimately root for Ellis in this ?riches to rags to riches? story. This socially relevant and uplifting drama about touch love, humility, and homelessness would appeal to a broad audience. Thank you for your time and consideration.?

The Do's and Don'ts of Do It Yourself Home Improvement | ej ...

The Do?s and Don?ts of Do It Yourself Home Improvement

Deciding to take on home improvement tasks on your own is both courageous and honorable. It can save you lots of money, teach you a valuable set of skills and leave you with a very satisfied feeling. Tackling the wrong home improvement project can also be the worst decision you?ve ever made in your life. So before you pick up that hammer, you might want to read this article on what to do and what not to do with taking on a do-it-yourself project.

Do take a step back

First thing you want to do is really access the project you need to do. It?s admirable to grab a set of instructions you found online and dive in but you could be opening up the possibility for irreversible damage and in some cases safety concerns. Access your understanding of what needs to be done and compare it with past experiences with similar or lesser projects. Ask friends, neighbors or co-workers if they?ve been in a similar situation and ask for tips and things to avoid. A good rule of thumb is that if there are major safety questions, best to look into other options. Once safety is reviewed and understood, it?s time to?

Do Get Prepared

Whether you need plans, tools, safety gear or even a ladder ? make sure you have everything you need. It?s cool when MacGyver makes a gun out of a pen on TV but in real life, the last thing you want to do is cut corners or use the wrong materials when dealing with your home. Create a detailed Excel spreadsheet or open a Google Document (docs.google.com) and list product, number needed, and expense. Use online resources to price out as needed to give you fairly accurate estimate of cost.

Do Set a Budget

Let me repeat that. Set a budget. It?s ok if you need to peer over the surface, but if you start pulling out your second charge card, you might want to stop and think about what you?re spending and if it is worth the cost. There are many cases where Do-It-yourself projects are started with the intention of saving money, but after many trips to the hardware store, repairing mistakes, the cost of the DIY project starts to get closer to what a professional would cost.

A quick tip could be: meet with a professional and pay him/her to consult with you on the best way to tackle a project. Paying someone to oversee or give guidance or solve problems with you doing the work would save time and costs considerably, but still get that professional oversight.

Don?t Ignore Safety Concerns or Codes

This is the most important thing to remember. No one will applaud your gusto if you hurt yourself, someone else or end up causing major damage to your home or rental property. Make sure you understand and adhere to all safety precautions, identify and protect yourself from hazardous materials and make sure you look into your county?s building codes and regulations. Do-over?s are fun in mini golf, not home improvement.

Don?t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

No one learns anything without asking questions. Guys at your local hardware store are usually more than happy to share their knowledge with you. If you have a handy friend, see if they?ll help. Two heads are always better than one and can also help you avoid frustration when there is someone else there to bounce ideas off of. And there?s almost always a few articles or videos online that may be able to shed some light on your project.

One good example of a DYI website with great resources and tips can be found here, http://www.familyhandyman.com/.

Israelis Ousted By Shomrim from London for Stealing Tzedaka Boxes

(Wednesday, August 29th, 2012)

A group of Israeli bochrim affiliated with a known chassidus was expelled from the London chareidi community by member of the Shomrim. The young men were caught on surveillance cameras taking a ?sizable sum? of tzedaka money from London shuls. After consulting with Shomrim?s rabbonim, the decision was made not to turn them over to police but to expel them, sending them home to Eretz Yisrael.

Shomrim officials spoke with the youths and the former assisted them in contacting assistance in Israel to pay back the stolen funds and to purchase tickets and to get out and not return. That was the ultimatum presented to them, one that they grabbed rather than explain their actions to local police.

Chadrei Chareidim adds that a resident of Stamford Hill added ?Shomrim officials refuse to speak about the case with the media for the simple reason they do not want details of the deal leaking to local police, with whom they maintain excellent working relations. The rumors circulating in the community made their way to Eretz Yisrael where the media picked up on the story?.

the red kitchen: Meet Olivia (the fish)

Everybody, meet Olivia (the fish).

He's white and orange and he came home with us in a bag.
Olivia (the girl) and Olivia (the fish) hit it off right away.
We bought him a vase for 45 cents at the thrift store, some pebbles from the dollar store, and a fake plant from the pet store. ?We also got him some water treatment stuff and some goldfish flakes.

Here he is acclimating to our room temperature (and appropriately treated) tap water from the comfort of his plastic bag.

When we let him loose later he even charmed us with his mad hide-and-go-seek skills.

So, we bought a fish today. ?Guess who named it.

Bryan doesn't know yet that we got it. ?Although, in all fairness, I did warn him the other day that I was thinking about buying a fish. ?

The truth is, I've tried to talk Bryan into buying a fish several times since we got married. ?I've succeeded a couple times, but the fish always dies a day or two later and then Bryan goes back to his?Scrooge-y ways. ?So I may have gone to buy the fish without him on purpose. ?Heh heh...

I had actually planned on buying a beta fish. ?I had a couple of beta fish (one at a time) for a while in high school and college and they were pretty hearty. ?My beta fish named Jackson was one that I got during my junior year of high school and it lasted all way through my sophomore year of college. ?

He even?survived?enjoyed a couple of trips on the airplane with me. ?He rode in my old Nalgene water bottle. ?And, yes, it was after the airlines were super strict about taking liquids on airplanes. ?Luckily the airport security figured that if I had a live fish actually swimming around in the water then it probably wasn't a bomb. ?(Side note: It wasn't a bomb. ?Score one for airport security using some good old common sense.)

Anyway, since Bryan and I got married the only fish we've ever had have been super cheapo goldfish. ?You know, the kind that they sell for 17 cents each that are really only meant to be sold as food for other fish. ?Man, whatevs. ?Goldfish are real fish too. ?(Though, admittedly, they do have a rather short shelf life.)

But, ahem, you may have noticed that Olivia (the fish) is not a beta fish. ?He's a goldfish. ?Partly we got him because he's so cute. ?

Also we got him because they were out of the cheap beta fish when Olivia (the girl) and I went to the pet store today. ?I had spent the whole trip to the pet store telling her how we were going to get a fish to bring home and after we found the fish we wanted wasn't available today she was getting pretty sad when I told her we'd have to go back another day.?

So instead I totally caved and bought a 17 cent goldfish instead. ?The new shipment of cheap beta fish comes in on Thursday, so I figured Olivia (the goldfish) could hopefully survive until then and then if he's still alive we'll just keep him instead of getting a beta fish. ?If he doesn't make it until Thursday, we'll go get a beta fish. ?Sentimental, I know.

But actually I did want a fish for sentimental reasons. ?Olivia (the girl) is starting preschool next week and she'll be gone almost as much as if she were in half day kindergarten. ?My heart is saying "Yahoo!" and "Boo hoo," all at the same time. ?I'm excited for all the free time to be able to focus on things and hopefully be really productive. ?But I'm not excited for the?loneliness?that may set in. ?So I thought I'd make sure I'm not the only living thing in the house when she's away. ?Hence, the new addition. ?

Obviously Olivia (the fish) isn't as friendly and cuddly as a dog or something, but we're not allowed to have pets (other than fish) and, anyway, I really am not interested in all the fur all over my stuff. ?And I had fish a lot when I was growing up, so, despite my realistic views on the lifeline of the common goldfish, I am a little sentimental about them.

Here's to hoping Olivia (the fish) doesn't die before tomorrow morning and I have lots of fun?frolicking?through the woods together and working on sewing projects while Olivia (the girl) is busy having the time of her life at preschool. ?:)

Online Video Revs Set to Double! - Monday, August 27, 2012 : Stock ...

Online video revenues are set to double by 2017 according to a new article out today in Home Media Magazine and Synacor (SYNC) is mentioned in the article as the market leader of the managed video platform (MVP) market! SYNC is the biggest steal in the market today! These prices won`t last! SYNC will soon explode back to double digits! Online Video Distribution Revenue Projected to Double by 2017 http://www.homemediamagazine.com/streaming/online-video-distribution-revenue-projected-double-2017-28163 The burgeoning market of companies and services responsible for delivering entertainment video over the Internet is expected to nearly double over the next five years to more than $4 billion, according to new data from ABI Research.

Success of TV Everywhere and subscription streaming services such as Xfinity Streampix, HBO Go, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime Instant Video, iPlayer and Sky Go, among others, is predicated on a growing cottage industry of online video platforms (OVPs), managed video platforms (MVDs), content management systems (CDNs), and content delivery networks (CDNs).

These platforms combined revenue for distributing video on behalf of media and entertainment companies (including cable & satellite distributors) globally will reach $2.1 billion this year. It is expected to grow to over $4 billion in 2017, according to Scottsdale, Ariz.-based ABI.

Among the video platforms, content delivery networks are best known in the general public, including Limelight and Akamai -- the latter leading the video delivery market, with about $475 million in revenue in 2011 spearheaded by a contract with Netflix. CDNs generally are responsible for finding optimal routes for the video and storing copies close to consumers to ensure a higher quality of delivery. Content delivery networks handle the logistics of video delivery for nearly all the online video operators.

Indeed, CDNs are considered so integral to the future of online video distribution that Netflix is creating its own CDN. It is developing a proprietary content delivery network in an effort to reduce reliance (and streaming issues) upon third-party CDN providers.

In a June 4 blog, Netflix said it would continue to deliver its data (i.e. streaming) through CDN providers Akamai, Limelight and others for the next few years while it develops an in-house open connect network (openconnect.netflix.com). About 5% of Netflix data already is served by Open Connect.

The worlds other major Internet video provider, YouTube, has long had its own content delivery network, wrote Ken Florance, VP of content delivery at Netflix. Given our size and growth, it now makes economic sense for Netflix to have one as well.

Meanwhile, KIT Digital leads the market for content management systems with nearly $175 million video delivery revenues from media and entertainment companies in 2011. Brightcove is the largest OVP with $64 million in 2011 media & entertainment revenues. Synacor, which primarily hosts websites for cable operators, leads the MVP market with nearly $91 million in 2011 revenues.

Sam Rosen, director of TV & video at ABI Research, said smaller content owners and those wanting social media integration and more basis platforms relay on OVPs, while MVPs are helpful for operators that dont have the technical expertise to deliver a video service, and want a turnkey solution. Content management systems (CMSs) are attractive to the largest operators seeking to manage all their video centrally.

Many of these companies claim the same competencies in video delivery, Rosen said. However, each offers a unique piece of the solution.

Survey: Legal arms trade worth $8.5 billion

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? A new survey by independent researchers says the value of the legal trade in small arms, light weapons, their parts and ammunition is at least $8.5 billion annually ? more than double the previous estimate of $4 billion in 2006.

The 2012 Small Arms Survey said the increase is due to a number of factors ? large-scale government purchases especially during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, increased spending by American civilians on foreign weapons and ammunition and better information.

Eric Berman, the survey's managing director, told reporters Monday it took four years to review the government-authorized small arms trade and researchers are now examining the illicit trade.

He estimated that the value of the legal and illegal small arms trade combined is over $10 billion annually.

Romney, Obama in dead heat heading into GOP convention

Mitt Romney heads into his nominating convention with a solid shot at the presidency but substantial challenges en route - including broad perceptions among a downturn-battered public that, if elected, he'd favor wealthy Americans over the middle class.

That view complicates Romney's job winning over the economically distressed white voters among whom his fortunes may depend. It's also expressed in his persistent weakness in personal popularity overall, as well as his shortfall against Barack Obama in views he understands the economic problems ordinary Americans are having.

See PDF with full results, charts and tables here.

Registered voters by a substantial 58-32 percent in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll think Romney would do more to favor the wealthy than the middle class - the opposite of views on Obama's priority. Obama has a slight 7-point edge in better understanding the public's economic straits, and another wide lead, 61-27 percent, as seeming more friendly and likeable.

As he seeks to address those weaknesses, Romney grasps his party's presidential nomination with pushback on at least two fronts: Better alignment with public preferences for more limited government, and steady dissatisfaction with Obama's economic performance. Fifty-six percent of registered voters disapprove of Obama's work on the economy; largely as a result, fewer than half, 47 percent, approve of his job performance overall.

These competing sentiments boil down to essentially a dead heat in vote preferences. Among registered voters in this national survey, 47 percent support Romney, while 46 percent favor Obama, a split well within the margin of sampling error.

It's the seventh time in 14 ABC/Post surveys this cycle that Romney's held a scant (even 1-point) numerical edge. That marks his continued opportunity, but also his difficulties taking full advantage of Obama's weaknesses, particularly on the still-struggling economy. Eighty-five percent of registered voters say it's in bad shape, and, in a related result, seven in 10 say the country's seriously off on the wrong track - two highly hazardous numbers for incumbents.

Indeed, Obama's support has slipped numerically in each of the last four ABC/Post polls - from 51 percent in April to 46 percent now - as economic sentiment has worsened amid persistent unemployment and a resumption in rising gasoline prices.

Romney, crucially, has a slight, seven-point lead among registered voters in trust to handle the economy, 50-43 percent. And he benefits from the fact that 58 percent say they're not confident the economy would improve under a second Obama term. But 52 percent aren't confident it would improve under Romney, either - suggesting that beyond criticizing Obama's economic performance, Romney could benefit by sharpening his argument that he'd do better.

Among other results, this survey, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates, finds a weak reception for Paul Ryan as Romney's vice presidential running mate - 54 percent of registered voters approve of the choice, somewhat lower than the customary levels in past elections. Still, that rises to 85 percent of "very" conservative registered voters and as many of those who strongly favor the Tea Party political movement, good for Romney in the GOP base.

Overall, though, two-thirds of registered voters say Ryan's selection will make no difference in their vote, while the rest divide essentially evenly on whether it makes them more or less likely to back the GOP ticket. And there is a risk: Registered voters by a broad 62-33 percent oppose Ryan's proposal to restructure Medicare. To date that does not look to have impacted trust to handle the issue, about an even division between Obama and Romney. That's in fact a plus for Romney, given the traditional Democratic advantage on Medicare. The question is how it plays out in the campaign ahead.

It's been tough so far for either candidate to gain much resonance. Apart from two polls with slight advantages for Obama in February and April, he and Romney have been essentially tied in 12 other ABC/Post matchups since April 2011. And while they're basically even in trust to handle one issue on which Obama has opportunity, Medicare, they're also tied on another, assisting small business, on which Romney's sought to portray Obama as out of touch.

The two are essentially even in trust to handle several other contentious issues, as well, including health care policy and education. Romney prevails in trust to handle the federal deficit. But Obama holds a big advantage, 52-38 percent, in trust to handle "social issues such as abortion and gay marriage," and leads Romney by 16 points on "addressing women's issues." (Neither of those has changed since spring.)

By extension of views on women's rights, Romney's overall support from registered women voters, a persistent difficulty for him, is just 43 percent, compared with his 51 percent support among men. (Obama, by contrast, has 49 percent support from registered women voters, 42 percent from men.)

Atop all these issues, the weight of public expectations represents another hurdle for Romney to address. Despite the dead-heat horse race, and the economy's continued straits, 56 percent of registered voters say they expect Obama ultimately to win a second term.

GOVERNMENT and POLICY - As noted, stated preferences on the size of government favor Romney. Fifty-nine percent of registered voters say they prefer smaller government with fewer services over larger government with more services. Sixty-nine percent ascribe the same preference to Romney. But 73 percent think Obama, instead, prefers larger government.

That result presents Romney with an unquestioned opportunity to pin the "big government" tag on Obama. But there are limits to the approach, and responses available to the Democratic camp.

For one, even while they profess a preference for smaller government, registered voters by 51-37 percent also say they think the government would do better trying to create jobs by "spending money on projects like roads, bridges and technology development" rather than by cutting taxes - an argument more in tune with Obama's position than Romney's. It matters: While those who prefer cutting taxes favor Romney by a vast 69-24 percent, those who see government spending as a better jobs-maker favor Obama by 62-31 percent.

Views of fairness - an Obama theme - also represent a potential shoal for Romney. Registered voters by an 18-point margin, 54-36 percent, see "unfairness in the economic system that favors the wealthy" as a bigger problem than "over-regulation of the free market that interferes with growth and prosperity," again showing more alignment with the Democratic argument. And again the connection with vote preference is profound - 87-11 percent for Romney among those focused on over-regulation; 71-20 percent for Obama among those concerned with fairness.

Beyond these, the Obama campaign may be seeking to keep a focus on Romney's personal wealth - and by extension the sense he'd favor the wealthy over the middle class - by continuing to call for fuller release of his tax returns.

Registered voters divide exactly evenly on whether or not fuller tax disclosure by Romney is needed, but just two in 10 call the issue a major factor in their vote. (That rises sharply among Obama supporters, likely the reason his campaign keeps on it.) Seventy-two percent, by contrast, call Obama's handling of the economy a major factor.

Again, though, Obama can find a reply: By 52-34 percent, more continue to blame the economy's current condition not on Obama, but on his predecessor, George W. Bush.

GROUPS and MOVERS - At 47-46 percent, Romney-Obama, vote preferences among registered voters now show a difference compared with all adults, who divide 49-42 percent in Obama's favor, a result indicating the pressure on Obama's side to register and turn out its base. (Among likely voters, at 49-47 percent, Romney-Obama, the race is similar to its level among registered voters.)

There's room to move: More than half of Romney's and Obama's supporters alike are less than "very" enthusiastic about their candidate. Fifteen percent say there's a chance they may change their minds, plenty enough to shake up the contest. Moreover, majorities say they're anxious about how their preferred candidate would perform in office (53 percent in Obama's case, and more, 62 percent, in Romney's), and four in 10 say they're seeking more information about the candidates - two more subtle indicators of the potential for movement.

Preferences - on policies and between candidates alike - of course are associated with partisan and ideological affiliation. Obama leads by 84-14 percent among liberals, while Romney holds numerically his best advantage to date among conservatives, 77-16 percent (though it was very similar in March). There are easily more conservatives than liberals among registered voters; Obama makes it back among moderates.

Independents, who often have been swing voters in national elections, divide narrowly, 47-43 percent between Romney and Obama among registered voters - a bit softer for Romney than last month. Obama's helped by the fact that Democrats outnumber Republicans by 7 points among registered voters in this survey (as they did in the 2008 exit poll). At the same time, his 83 percent support among Democrats lags Romney's 91 percent among Republicans.

Among other groups, Romney holds a broad 55-37 percent advantage among whites overall, while Obama has 76 percent support from nonwhites. As noted, economically stressed whites may be of particular interest; among those with incomes under $50,000, Romney has 50 percent support in this group - indicating opportunity to improve, if he strikes the right message.

TONE and REACHOUT - Another potential factor is the campaign's tone, an issue on which there are criticisms on both sides: More than half of registered voters say each candidate has been mainly attacking his opponent rather than addressing the issues.

Slightly more say that about Romney than said it about John McCain at about this time in 2008. But vastly more say it about Obama now - 56 percent - than did in late August 2008, just 29 percent. The question here is whether that change in tone draws more voters to a more-combative candidate Obama - or sends them away.

A final issue, and a potentially critical one, is voter contact - and on this measure, Obama has the high ground. As of this point, relatively few of Romney's supporters, 18 percent, say they've been contacted by a representative of his campaign. Far more Obama supporters - 31 percent - say they've been contacted by Obama's campaign. The ground game is one key battle Obama won four years ago. For Romney, once his convention's over, it's another important box to check.

METHODOLOGY - This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by telephone Aug. 22-25, 2012, among a random national sample of 857 registered voters (out of 1,002 adults overall), including landline and cell-phone-only respondents. Results have a margin of sampling error of 4 points for the full sample and registered voters alike. The survey was produced for ABC News by Langer Research Associates of New York, N.Y., with sampling, data collection and tabulation by Abt-SRBI of New York, N.Y.

Groups to push marriage equality during DNC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? The constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in the host state of the Democratic National Convention has stirred anger and resentment among advocates for marriage equality, many of whom are converging on Charlotte this weekend for the city's gay pride festival.

Organizers say they hope the festival will draw attention to the issue and create momentum that lasts through the political convention that starts the following week. Some of the thousands of protesters expected at the convention will be demonstrating for gay marriage.

"We're excited that the convention is in Charlotte," said David Webb, one of the pride festival's organizers. "But we also want to show that we're united and will continue to push for change."

When North Carolina voters passed the constitutional amendment in May, supporters of gay marriage first demanded that Democrats rethink Charlotte as the location of their convention. But advocates have since seized on the party gathering as a high-profile chance to make their message heard ? with support from the party itself. The national party is expected to approve marriage equality as part of its national platform during the convention being held from Sept. 4-6.

For the first two days, the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte's downtown will be the main venue. On the last day, President Barack Obama will make his acceptance speech at the 74,000-seat outdoor Bank of America Stadium where the city's NFL team plays.

Webb said public events like the festival and convention are important opportunities to rally same-sex couples who were discouraged by the North Carolina vote.

"It's an opportunity for the community to say, 'Yes. The state may have passed an amendment limiting our liberties, but we're going to keep fighting.' This is an opportunity to show the community and ourselves that, you know what, we're not down and out," he said.

At Saturday's Pride Charlotte Festival, thousands of people attended for the food, fun and entertainment. But others said they were drawn because they were upset with the recent vote to ban same-sex marriage and wanted to show solidarity.

Deborah Foster, 31, a waitress, said she and her friends wanted to send a message: "The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community is not going to go away," she said. "There's strength in numbers. "

"It was just uncalled for," she said of the amendment. "We're just trying to have the same rights as married couples. It seems that even today there is still hatred out there. It's just wrong."

Foster has been dating the same woman for two years. They want to get married ? but can't. She also plans to attend the Sept. 2 protest called the March on Wall Street South. The demonstration includes a coalition of more than 70 groups. The groups say they want to draw attention to economic inequality and other issues. The national Occupy movement also has issued a loose call for protesters, as have anarchist groups. Some will be protesting for marriage equality.

"We just have to stay visible and strong. That's why I'm going to the protest. We have to make our voices heard," she said.

That's also why Jim Parker, who is gay, also plans to attend the convention protest. The 22-year-old University of North Carolina Charlotte student said protests can make a difference. Charlotte and parts of North Carolina have gained the reputation in recent years as being tolerant. The vote was a setback, Parker said.

"When you look at the vote, you say, 'Who are these people?' It sets an ugly unaccepting tone. I've had friends ask me: 'What's going on in North Carolina?' I can't answer that question."

When the Democratic Party picked Charlotte to host the convention, the proposal to change North Carolina's constitution was not on the ballot. Like so many states, same-sex marriage already was illegal in North Carolina.

Voters approved the amendment declaring that marriage between a man and woman is the only legal domestic union, prompting angry supporters of same-sex marriage to urge Democrats to move the convention. President Barack Obama stated his support for gay marriage a day after the North Carolina vote.

Democrats have been trying to address the issue. The national Democratic Party's platform committee recently endorsed gay marriage for the first time and called for the repeal of a federal law that recognizes marriage as between a man and a woman.

The platform is a broad statement of the party's priorities on the economy, social issues and national defense that's up for approval at the convention.

Scott Dibble, a committee member and a state senator from Minnesota, said support for gay marriage can attract new voters.

"Young people are looking for a political home right now. This has become a defining moral question of our time," said Dibble, who is gay.

The platform says Democrats support "marriage equality" and the "movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples."

J. Michael Bitzer, a political science and history professor at Catawba College, said Democrats can use the North Carolina vote as "rallying cry for their platform."

"But I think it kinds of sets up an awkwardness that the national Democrats will ratify or solidify their support for marriage equality in a state that recently banned gay marriage," he said

The convention creates an opportunity for more dialogue about same-sex marriage, said the Rev. Jasmine Beach-Ferrar, executive director of the Campaign for Southern Equality. Her group has been organizing the "We Do" campaign which advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

"This convention is a way to highlight some of these contentious issues because North Carolina helps illustrates what's going on. It's good to remind people what's going on here," Beach-Ferrar said.

She said it's an important issue. Same-sex couples don't have the same rights as married couples. That complicates issues such as benefits and adoption.

"For me, there's clearly a real urgency on the issue. And I'm eager for us to move beyond the very predictable polarized debate and actually start talking about how real people are being impacted by discriminatory laws and what the solution is," she said.

James Holmes allegedly told classmate he wanted to kill people

James Holmes (Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office)
DENVER?James Holmes, the suspect in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater massacre, told a classmate in March that he wanted to kill people.

That's alleged in court records released Friday. Also contained in a motion by the prosecution is information that Holmes failed a graduate school oral examination at the University of Colorado in June?just weeks before the shooting rampage that killed 12 and left dozens injured at a screening of the latest Batman film.

The Arapahoe County district attorney's office is seeking Holmes' educational records and has indicated that his grades, emails, admission applications and other school-related activity are relevant to the July 20 shooting.

"What's going on in the defendant's [education] life is extremely relevant in this case," Karen Pearson, an attorney with the DA's office, said during Thursday's hearing.

The prosecution's records also indicate Holmes was denied access to the university, where he was studying neuroscience, on June 12, after he threatened a professor. He then, the DA's office said, began a "detailed and complex" plan to obtain firearms, ammunition, a tear-gas grenade, body armor, a gas mask and a ballistic helmet?all of which, the prosecution said, were used in the crime.

Holmes' defense team says looking into the suspect's education records is a "fishing expedition," and that any motive is irrelevant. The defense has said Holmes is mentally ill.

The 24-year-old faces 142 accounts, including 24 counts of first-degree murder and more than 100 charges of attempted murder.

Many companies still choose to do their payroll in-house, but is it really the best option?

The average company does payroll on biweekly (or twice a month) basis, some on a weekly basis, and a few businesses pay once a month. With the advent of so many online payroll services these days, the questions for many businesses is, should they employ someone in-house to do payroll, or outsource it.

Outsourcing payroll can help a company move resources to areas of their business that make money, not cost it. A company?s focus should be on making profit, so in this sense, doing payroll in-house is more of a liability. However, some business owners feel that outsourcing gives them less control over their payroll when in fact the opposite is true. By using a good online payroll service, you actually gain more control as almost all online payroll systems keep meticulous records that can verified anytime by logging on to your account.

Another great benefit to outsourcing payroll is, not having to keep up with the ever changing tax compliance rules and laws. This alone is worth the fee paid for online payroll services.

But not all online payroll services are created equal. It?s best to know what your needs are and then shop to find the best pricing that offers the most. Be careful who you choose, especially if record archiving is important to you, as many payroll services will delete your files if you stop using their payroll system. Look for an online payroll service that archives your data, even if you stop using their services.

Aside from price, the second largest issue in using a payroll service is customer care. In these days of automated phone options, one wonders if a living breathing person actually works at some of these places. So if human interaction is a major concern for you, make sure the company you decide to do business with really answers their phone, without sending you to Antarctica for support.

Next, you want to consider the learning curve. Some online payroll systems require you learn a confusing array of commands to get going, while others are so easy a fifth grader could use them. An easy to use payroll system doesn?t mean you?re not getting your monies worth, it just means it was well thought out.

For small to medium sized businesses the pain of doing payroll is not real great, it?s the quarterly and annual reports for state and federal that leaves a lot of small business owners groaning from the paperwork, not to mention how time consuming it can be. Most payroll service providers include these reports with their monthly fees, but check the fine type to make sure you?re not paying extra for it.

What to look for.
Find a payroll service where you?re not bound by a term contract, meaning, you can quit the service from one payroll cycle to the next; is affordably priced, has great customer service, archives your data, no set-up fees, and won?t charge you extra for quarterly and annual reports, and, one that offers you a verity of ways in how you pay your employees. Also, if your company is a one man operation, make sure you use a payroll service that will only charge you for times you actually use the service, and not just a monthly recurring fee.

Essential Internet Marketing For Successful Businesses

Taking into consideration the rise of e-commerce and a drastic increase in the number of consumers who are turning to the internet for shopping advice. It is not wondered that more and more businesses are relying on online marketing to drive sales. Join the best and the brightest by checking out this handpicked selection of internet marketing tips and tricks.

Don't waste your title tag, which happens to be the most important tag. Don't waste the space in your tag to say something like, "Welcome." Search engines use your title tag to help define the site. Use your title tag to state your service or product and your location.

Customers like numbers. Be as specific as you can when telling a consumer how well a product performed for others, such as saying "97% of people were completely satisfied." Don't lie. Using statistics can satisfy a customer's concerns for product ratings, and greatly increase your sales, if you use them correctly.

When advertising any product online, make sure you let your target audience know why they need to buy your product. If you make a person think that their life could become infinitely better if they purchase your product, they'll buy it immediately. Simply pointing out that your product is a great buy isn't enough.

When dealing with real estate internet marketing, your site needs both traffic and a lead generation system. A busy website without the means for lead generation will never increase your business. Visitors will travel in and out, but will never leave much behind that is of real value to you.

Use social networking platforms to your advantage. Send out the links to reputable social networking sites, of any new, exciting and fresh content on your website. Whether it's under the company's account, recommended by a friend or visitor, or retweeted, this will help tremendously in getting visitors to view your site.

First impressions can last a long time in the internet marketing world, so make sure that your content will be something visitors to your site will remember in a positive way. Get to the point and serve up some value in the first few paragraphs. Put your best information right at the top.

Any successful business venture needs to be clearly defined, and this is especially true when marketing online. If searchers do not know what your business or site is about, the odds of them actually finding it are slim to none. How would anyone find your product if it's not defined for them? Remember to be specific.

While blogging it is important to write formally. This is not texting or talking to your buddies. Use proper sentence structure and real words. This will convey to your readers that you are an authority on your topic and it lends credence to the validity of your internet marketing site.

Never become content with your website if you are performing well in sales. When you are at the top, there are people who are going to try to bring you down. Therefore, you should always be focusing on improving your weakest links, to maximize profits and stay ahead of competitors.

If you want to use the internet to effectively market your business, you should take advantage of press releases. Media outlets thrive on these press releases and they can provide tremendous amounts of promotion. With more and more media outlets popping up in the internet age, you have even more opportunities for good press.

Follow these tips so that your internet marketing goals are met. You can reach a lot of people on the internet, but that's not enough. You have to reach the right kind of people, and these tips will help you do that. Stay committed and watch the positive results arrive.
