U.S. agents arrest ex-soldier wanted for war crimes in Bosnia

(Reuters) - A former Bosnian platoon commander accused of war crimes has been arrested by federal agents in New York on an extradition request from his home country, authorities said on Wednesday.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, or ICE, said Sulejman Mujagic was arrested on Wednesday in Utica, New York, by federal agents following an extradition request from the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

More than 100,000 people were killed and millions more displaced during the violent breakup in the 1990s of multi-ethnic Yugoslavia, of which present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina formed a part.

Mujagic, 50, has been charged there with unlawful killing of the enemy and unlawful wounding and torture of a prisoner of war while he was commanding a platoon in the army of the Autonomous Province of Western Bosnia during the war, ICE said in a news release.

The charges stem from March 1995, when Mujagic was accused of murdering a captured soldier and torturing another captured soldier who were fighting on behalf of the army of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Mujagic had lived in Utica since July 1997 as a legal permanent resident. His arrest followed a probe by agents with ICE's Homeland Security Investigations agency, or HSI, as well as other federal and local law enforcement agencies.

"United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina authorities have cooperated on numerous war crimes cases in the past and will continue to work closely together in the future to bring alleged perpetrators of war crimes to justice," ICE said in a statement.

"HSI is committed to rooting out alleged human rights violators who seek a safe haven in the United States," it added.

Since 2004, ICE said HSI had deported more than 400 known or suspected human rights violators from the United States. It currently has more than 180 active investigations and is pursuing more than 1,900 leads and removal cases involving suspected human rights violators from nearly 95 countries.

Day of reckoning for Cameron and British press

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron faces a no-win dilemma on Thursday when a far-reaching inquiry into British newspapers delivers its verdict on how to curb the excesses of the country's notoriously aggressive press.

Cameron, who was embarrassed when details of his personal links to Rupert Murdoch and his media empire emerged at the inquiry, will have to decide whether to accept its findings, which risk dividing his coalition government and angering an already hostile press.

He will give his response to the House of Commons after the report is published at 8.30 a.m. EST, under scrutiny from the chamber's public gallery filled with high-profile figures who have campaigned for a clampdown on an industry they say ruins lives.

The inquiry was ordered by Cameron following public outrage at Murdoch's now defunct News of the World tabloid, whose journalists had hacked the phone messages of schoolgirl Milly Dowler, who was later found dead.

Exposing the cosy relationships between political leaders, police chiefs and press barons, the inquiry revealed the "dark arts" of journalists seeking ever more salacious stories in a bid to hold up dwindling circulation figures.

Huge attention will be focused on whether Lord Justice Brian Leveson, one of Britain's top judges, recommends a new body to regulate the press with powers enshrined in law, or merely says the existing system of self-regulation should be overhauled.

He could also criticize Cameron's government, including one of his most senior ministers, Jeremy Hunt, for close ties to Murdoch's News Corp and their handling of the company's aborted bid to take control of pay-TV group BSkyB in what would have been its largest acquisition.

The press, backed by some 80 members of parliament, has lobbied hard for Cameron to resist calls for legislation, arguing it would curb freedom of speech and mean newspapers requiring state approval for the first time since 1695.

However, a similar number of lawmakers, as well as academics and celebrities, favor statutory regulation while opinion polls suggest the public also agrees.

The issue has divided the cabinet and could put the prime minister at odds with the leader of the Liberal Democrats, the junior partners in the coalition government.

"The status quo is unacceptable and needs to change," Cameron told parliament on Wednesday. "This government set up Leveson because of unacceptable practices in parts of the media and because of a failed regulatory system."

Some media have speculated that Cameron will give the press one last chance to get its house in order even if Leveson backs a new law, although critics say there have been similar repeated warnings for half a century, all of which have been ignored.

Under the watchful eye of Leveson, celebrities - including Hollywood actor Hugh Grant, Harry Potter author JK Rowling, singer Charlotte Church, Dowler's parents and other unknown Britons who found themselves in the media spotlight, told the inquiry how they had been harassed, bullied, and traumatized by the press.

Four prime ministers including Cameron were also quizzed in great detail about their links to newspaper owners, especially Murdoch, who himself endured two days of grilling, during which he denied playing puppet-master to those running the country.

The inquiry heard intimate emails and text messages between Cameron and Murdoch's top lieutenant Rebekah Brooks, who goes on trial next year over the alleged phone hacking.

"A lot of these very difficult decisions are no-win situations politically but what the prime minister wants to do is to do the right thing, and that's the kind of decision that will stand the test of time," Hunt, a former Culture Secretary and now Health Secretary, told Sky News.

Last tile tops off multi-million Hospital lab investment ...

TOCeremony002Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust has celebrated a key milestone for its new Pathology building with a traditional ?roof topping? ceremony.

The jointly funded ?8 million development involves a two storey extension to the current pathology building on the Heartlands Hospital site and will accommodate a new centralised core laboratory. It will also house a state-of-the-art molecular biology laboratory for the diagnosis of infectious diseases and genetically acquired conditions.

The team of 400 laboratory medicine and Health Protection Agency (HPA) staff working in the laboratory currently turn around more than 2.6 million clinical sample requests every year for the Hospital Trust and GPs in the surrounding community, plus public health samples from across the region. The extension will increase the laboratory?s capacity in line with demand, whilst modernising the services provided for patients and public health.

Completion of the building work was marked by Lord Philip Hunt, the Trust?s Chairman who placed the last tile on the building?s roof, thereby completing this key stage of the building development.

Lord Hunt said: ?I?m thrilled to see the progress on the Heartlands pathology complex.? Providing an excellent patient experience is at the core of what we do. This new development will allow us to provide an improved service including an increased amount of samples turned around every year and 24 hour service for local GPs.?

Lesbian brutally beaten by girlfriend's brother at Thanksgiving ...

Mallory Owens and Alex Hawkins.

Mallory Owens and Alex Hawkins. Inset picture Mallory Owens after sustaining her injuries.

Mallory Owens? attacker?s father denies hate crime. Welcomed her with open arms.

Mallory Owens reckons her beating was not a hate crime.

It is being reported that a 23 year old woman, Mallory Owens was brutally beaten by her girlfriend?s brother because he didn?t approve of his sister?s relationship.

The beating came after Alex Hawkins brought her lover, Mallory Owens to a family Thanksgiving dinner which led to her 18 year old brother Travis Hawkins Jr taking intense displeasure at the fact that she was involved in a lesbian relationship. It is said after the dinner, Travis Hawkins knocked Mallory Owens to the floor before proceeding to savagely pummel her face with his fists.

Said Kristi Taylor, Mallory Owen?s mother: ?He tried to kill her. He?s lucky he didn?t kill her. She?s lucky to be alive. I didn?t recognize her when I got here. It?s hard to look at her like that.?

Pursuant to the beating the young woman was hospitalized and treated for a broken nose and numerous lacerations as well multiple skull fractures. Her eyes were swollen shut after the brutal beating and she had to receive facial reconstruction surgery.

According to Kristi Taylor there had been ongoing friction between her daughter and that of the Hawkins family who dissented over their daughter?s relationship with Mallory Owens.

Media outlet WKRG-TV reports that earlier this year, Hawkins allegedly hit Miss Owens over the head with a pipe wrench. While injured during that attack, no charges at the time were filed.

Mallory Owens

Mallory Owens

Upon hearing that her daughter would be joining the Hawkins family for thanksgiving dinner, Kristi Taylor urged her daughter otherwise: ?I did not want her to go, I begged her not to go, knowing how the family felt about her. But she said, ?They?re trying to be nice.??

Since the brutal beating a Facebook group entitled ?Charge Travis Hawkins Jr with the attempted murder of Mallory Owens? has sprung up on Facebook, garnering nearly 600 likes in less than a day.

But it gets worse, according to Miss Owens? sister Avery Godwin, she?told AL.com that Travis Hawkins later called her on Friday to say ?that he would finish what he started last night with Mallory.?

WKRG goes on to report that discord within the Hawkins family has been an ongoing state of affairs with the revelation that Travis Hawkins was hospitalized in January of 2011 after allegedly being shot in the chest by his father, Travis Hawkins Sr.

The outlet goes on to report that Travis Hawkins Sr was later released on bail and the case was never brought to trial after his son refused to testify against him.

Since the attack, Travis Hawkins Jr has been arrested by authorities and charged with second degree assault and consequently later released the same day after making bond. Although some reckon he ought to be charged with attempted murder as well as perpetrating a hate crime, something that Mallory Owen?s family has at present declined to pursue.

Mallory Owens

Mallory Owens

Complicating the pursuit of hate crime charges against Travis Hawkins Jr is the fact that Alabama state where the incident took place at present doesn?t include sexual orientation in its hate crimes statute. One can only wonder why? Pressure is now mounting that Federal authorities now step up and apply pressure for hate crime charges to be applied.

Commented D.A. Ashley Rich:??We?re on top of this, and we?re making sure that the case is proceeding down the criminal path,?

?We are assessing her injuries, everything regarding her hospital stay. But at this time, he is charged with causing serious physical injuries to her, which is assault second degree under the laws of the State of Alabama.?

Travis Hawkins Jr

Travis Hawkins Jr

Since the attack, AL is reporting that the Owens family has set up an account to send donations to help pay for their daughter?s surgery and hospital time. Although she will be released yesterday, she will have to return to the University of South Alabama Medical Center on Thursday to consult a plastic surgeon for her injuries.

What?s equally disturbing is why the story took concerted efforts from one Facebook user Sonia Mason?to make it to the mainstream press, having only made headlines 4 days after the incident first took place.

Ultimately one has to wonder how such a crime was able to be perpetrated in the first place and why for that matter the state of Alabama does not have a clause for assault against another human being strictly because of their sexual orientation classified as a hate crime? Then again that may tell us something about the general attitude towards same sex couples in certain quarters of the country and the implicit state condoning of such behavior and attitudes which to some degree embolden intolerance towards same sex couples.

One also wonders about the general degree of dysfunction in the family and the malicious behavior of male role models in the Hawkins family, which may suggest a lot why Alex Hawkins chose to be a lesbian in the first place?

At present the following petition to support Mallory Owens and bring her attacker to justice has also been created:

How rare black dahlias get their color

Of the 20,000 varieties of dahlia flowers, only 10 to 20 kinds are black in color. Now researchers say they've solved the molecular mystery of how these rare flowers get their dark hues.

Flower color in dahlias is determined by a mixture of plant metabolites called flavonoids. Scientists already know that red dahlias' tones come from high concentrations of anthocyanins, flavonoids that are responsible for the color of blueberries, blue corn, blackberries and other fruits and vegetables. White dahlias, meanwhile, are short on anthocyanins but contain large amounts of flavones, flavonoids that are colorless themselves but can alter the shade of a flower by interacting with pigments like anthocyanin.

Researchers from the Vienna University of Technology in Austria analyzed the pigments, enzyme activity and gene expression in samples of black dahlias to study their deep burgundy hues. Compared to most varieties, black dahlias have huge amounts of anthocyanins and drastically reduced concentrations of flavones, confirmed by the flowers' low flavone synthase II (FNS) isoenzyme activity, the researchers found.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Climate issue heats up after superstorm

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: The climate change issue has been virtually a non-issue during the presidential campaign ? but it's primed to take a higher profile after the elections, in part due to Hurricane Sandy's horrific aftermath.

    2. How to cope with lab-animal tragedy
    3. Elephant can speak Korean ? out loud
    4. Bulgaria claims to find Europe's oldest town

But the color of black dahlias is not simply due to increased activity of the plant's anthocyanin pathway ? molecular intermediates that would normally form flavones are converted into extra anthocyanins, the team found.

The findings suggest there could be a way to engineer dahlias with tailor-made flavone contents to produce specific colors.

"The strategy of bypassing flavones into anthocyanins is a new approach," study researcher Heidi Halbwirth told LiveScience in an email. Halbwirth added that understanding how the black dahlia manages to knock out the FNS isoenzyme activity could improve techniques for flower breeding and could be used to develop a marker for the color change.

The research was detailed online Thursday in BioMed Central's journal BMC Plant Biology.

Ron Paul Blames the Gaza Conflict on Israel, American Middle East Policy

Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, may be retiring from elected politics, having lost his latest bid for the presidency, but he is still making his views heard. In a recent oped, Paul opened his mind about the causes of the recent Israel-Gaza missile war.

Paul blames Israel, American Middle East policy on the conflict

Paul places the blame in his oped for continued conflict between Israel and the Hamas regime in Gaza in both American Middle Eastern policy and Israel's "imposed inhuman conditions in Gaza" and its "destructive policies." The often-heard complaint that Israel should not have to tolerate hundreds of missiles being fired against it does not impress Paul. The Obama administration, in his view, is undertaking a similar policy through use of drone strikes against terrorist targets in countries such as Yemen and Pakistan. America's tilt toward Israel, in Paul's view, undermines its role as a peacemaker in the Middle East.

Ron Paul: Gaza a 'concentration camp'

Paul has had some controversial things to say about Gaza before. In a 2009 interview with Iranian state television, during the midst of a previous conflict between Israel and the Hamas government, Paul referred Gaza as a "concentration camp" and denied that the Hamas government was the aggressor. He suggested that if the United States were to stop supporting Israel, the Jewish state would be forced to start negotiating with its Arab neighbors, such as the Hamas regime in Gaza.

Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005

As the Washington Post reported at the time, Israel withdrew its forces from Gaza in 2005, dismantling Jewish settlements. While this move was controversial, the expectation was that this move would reduce terrorist attacks on Israel.

Hamas rocket attacks on Israel

According to Global Security, the Hamas regime has conducted periodic rocket bombardments on Israeli territory, the most recent coming this month. The weapons systems are a combination of homemade rockets and more sophisticated missiles smuggled into Gaza from Iran. These weapons tend to be undiscriminating , meant to hit civilian areas, sowing terror and fear. In response, Israel had imposed a partial naval blockade on Gaza, an operation that has proven to be controversial in the international community, but which Israel justifies because of the continued belligerency of the Hamas regime. Israel has also built a system of missile defenses, starting with the Iron Dome, which seems to have worked with great effectiveness in the most recent conflict. Israel has also launched air strikes against missile launchers and other military targets in Gaza and in the most recent conflict, threatened a ground invasion,

Hamas dedicated to the destruction of Israel

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the founding charter Hamas calls for the destruction of the State of Israel and its replacement with an Islamist state that would also include Gaza and the West Bank, the latter currently administered by the Palestinian Authority. This stance may prove to be a complicating factor in Paul's desire for Israel to negotiate with Hamas.

Texas resident Mark Whittington writes about state issues for the Yahoo! Contributor Network.

dami.moor: Professional Reflections: A Service Delivery Issue I feel ...

An issue I feel strongly about is using scores from standardized tests to determine (assess) an individual?s speech and language abilities. I learned about what validity and reliability mean in reference to using standardized testing tools early in my educational course work for this field. What is bothersome to me is that while it is common knowledge that most if not all exams, especially those for children, are not ?normed? on children I would test, many agencies and supervisors demand a score as part of an evaluation report.

Children I would test are those that live in New York City and the New York region (i.e., Long Island, Yonkers, Westchester). Further exasperating this topic are those children which are exposed to more than one language. These children do not follow the ?typical? speech and language developmental norms of any monolingual community. Therefore, why are SLPs using these testing tools to make an assessment? Some may think the SLP is monolingual and may not be aware. Let?s make it clear, there is no SLP that should graduate from any program, bilingual or not, that is not aware of reading a testing manual at the least. We are also taught, even if briefly, that testing tools should be scanned to remove or adjust bias questions/materials and that bilingual children should be tested by bilingual SLPs. Let me make another point clear: while a person is bilingual it does not qualify them to assess a bilingual person. For example, I am proficiently bilingual in English and Spanish. ??

What is especially worrisome is that while this is such a touchy subject, a certified SLP can actually lose their license over this issue/topic (using a score to report findings). I would venture and guess that one or two malefactions would not substantiate a license being revoked, however it baffles me as to how not more of an emphasis is made on using appropriate testing materials and informed clinical opinions to report findings instead of using scores from a test. In New York City there are rarely any children that would meet the reliability, validity, and norming standards for any test that I know of, yet I find that too often they are used to assess the child?s language abilities.

Catherine J. Crowley is not only the director of the Bilingual Institute at Teachers College, Columbia University but she is an advocate for this issue. In reality, I cannot say she is an advocate she is the leader who identifies what issues need to change and how to go about changing them. Last year when I started at the institute she informed us of some upcoming trainings and reforms regarding this precise topic: agencies forcing their employees to use scores to report a disorder/delay. Cate, as she likes to be addressed by her students, is still conducting trainings around the city to various agencies and changing policies as we speak. She has a lot of support, some of which is through her students and staff. Cate posts information on the institution?s Facebook page such as rallies, petitions, current events, etc. This is a person that I would reach out to about this issue and support for continuing to proctor this change.?

Im not looking for sex. Im looking for a friend, someone to talk to, someone to spend time with. It is depressing being alone all the time and I am becoming more and more anti-social as the days go by. My panic attacks are getting worse too when im around other people. All I do is try to stay strong and "man the fuck up", and nothing positive comes from it. This dating site thing was a last ditch effort to try to meet people... I havent felt SO shitty and worthless than I do now. I try to rationalize it and think of reasons why not a single fucking person has even given me even a shred of a chance, like maybe I posted some bad pictures or maybe my profile is poorly written. I seriously do not understand anymore and its making me hate who I am... like Im not good enough for ANYONE, not a single fucking human being on this planet:sad: It is SO disheartening, I cannot begin to express the pain I feel on a daily basis, because I feel like such a loser, SUCH a loner.

What is the point of all this pain? What is the point of trying SO FUCKING HARD and seeing 0 results? Not even once! I cannot even justify those odds with a positive thought.

hey, OP, have you thought about maybe attending some local shroomery gatherings? the people here are great and many of them would love to be your friends, i'm sure.

i'm probably not anywhere close to you, i'm not really close to anyone, but i do have a PM box that is always open to those who wish to use it. i know you want someone to hang out with, but i can offer what i can give. if you ever need to really talk, just shoot me a PM and you can have at least a moment of my time, mostly likely more.

(don't be discouraged if i don't respond RIGHT away though, i will thoughtfully respond when i know i have sufficient time to. ^_^)

Sorry to hear your situation.? The only advice I can offer up is to figure out what hobbies and activities you enjoy outside of work, and engage in them locally.? Sharing time in a group with people who share your interest is a inherent precursor to friends.

I recently broke up with my long-term girlfriend after we had moved together to a new city.? Now I've lost my social safety net, and I've gotta get back into the world again.? I'm about go embark on the same journey you NEED to embark on:

Seeking out local interests.

Go do it. Today.

Join a chess club, yoga, shooting club, local kickball league, ANYTHING.? Just go there, try to be friendly but not creepy/needy/isolated/etc.? You know, all that normal shit.

Try to have a good time.? Grab a drink or two at home before you go to the place if you want to take a edge off (just don't become reliant on this, or people might pick up on it and assume you an alcoholic).

Aw, OP, I really feel for you because I've had anxiety before and though it wasn't caused by social situations it would still effect social situations. And when I first moved to Philly I knew literally no one, I moved in the summer before I started college and I just felt lonely and lost and it was terrible.

I think that you should seek help for your anxiety. I can guarantee you that the things you think about yourself are mainly borne out of that anxiety. Once you get to the root cause of that and learn to manage it, being social will become so much easier and thus, meeting people!
I really hope things look up for you!

Before you, your mom and dad used to
Smoke in the Texas sun - They were young once too.
Your mom, she found Jesus
While your old man stepped out and drew up his veins

It's quiet, in the house of the old
You can hear through grinding teeth, clocks takin' their toll
'Cause time has a mind of it's own
And like our sun spinnin' 'round, it won't slow for you now

Don't mean to hijack, but what if you are introverted and find it hard to talk to people? I'm in a similar boat and I'm deeply involved in a couple activities. But in most cases, I don't see the same people outside the activity.

those girls on okcupid get literally 100s of messages a day. the ratio between guys to girls on there is absurd. even average looking uninteresting girls get hit up constantly so their egos are out of touch with reality. it is 100% a numbers game, if you are above average looks wise, tall, and have your life on track, still only like 1 in 20 attractive girls will respond to you, so its not just you lol.

Not in my experience; perhaps the ratio is skewed, but not insanely so, I believe. Not on OKCupid at least.

There's some truth in this. It's funny, you see, because on dating sites, you'd expect people to show their best side. What happens though, is that women transform magically into arrogant ice queens and men into testosterone-driven baboons. It's the consequence of the online dating dynamic. Men send out 100s of messages because they know only 1% will receive a response (well, up to 20% if you're lucky, but not more than that). Needless to say, these messages aren't all very-well thought through, because otherwise, online dating would actually be a full-time job. So women get annoyed by the standard messages they receive and don't bother to answer the vast majority of them. Which leads the men to send out even more messages, and so forth.

If you want to experience the ugliest side of humans, either watch a documentary about the Nazis or join OKCupid

Come on man, he's not trying to get laid. He wants companionship, and the only thing worse than not having someone is paying to have someone.

I have no evidence to back my opinion about these online dating services, but I kinda think there is disproportionate number of people looking to fuck around on their husbands/wives/spouses, etc.

Kidnap someone and hold them prisoner in your basement.

Oh, there's always a healthy share of cheaters, swingers, cuckolders and poly's on there. Most of them actually drop hints about it in their profiles, especially on OKCupid, so if you keep your eyes open, it's usually pretty clear.

Oh, so incredibly funny and mature! I don't feel like using the ban script at the moment, but I really should. Read the fucking rules of this forum again, n00b.
