NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. ? It may be only a matter of time before the ACC Tournament comes to Madison Square Garden ? and you can count Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina?s Roy Williams among those who?d like to see it happen.
?We have New York, we should use it,? Coach K told SNY.tv at the Peach Jam. ?If we don?t use it, we?re foolish. We use [Madison Square Garden] at Duke, we come there every year.?
Both Coach K and Williams said they would at least be in favor of rotating the ACC Tournament through the Garden ? if not having it there every year.
?It?s really, really hard for me to give up on Greensboro (N.C.), but boy having the ACC Tournament in New York would really be something special,? Williams told SNY.tv.
?And at the same time, I?m an old traditionalist and an ACC guy and I love the way Greensboro turns out for the tournament. It?s the most important thing going on in the city. So I?m one of those guys that sits on the fence and that?s not usually a stance that I like to take. I don?t think there?s anything wrong with moving the tournament and playing in two locations. But I will say this, I would be one of those guys that would be in favor of New York and Greensboro.?
The ACC?s deal with Greensboro runs for two more seasons, but sites have not been determined beginning in 2016.
In October, the Big East Conference and the Garden announced an extension through 2026.
Since then, Louisville has bolted for the ACC and the ?Catholic Seven? split from the old Big East and ultimately formed the new Big East with the additions of Butler, Creighton and Xavier.
Multiple sources told SNY.tv that the Garden has caveats that would allow them to get out of the contract if certain ticket sale thresholds and other standards are not met.
One ACC coach suggested that the league could also simply offer to buy out the Big East in order to move the ACC event there permanently.
Of course, it remains unclear what would happen to the Big East Tournament under such a scenario.
The Barclays Center in Brooklyn is committed to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for four more years.
By 2014, seven former Big East schools will be in the 15-team ACC: Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Louisville, Boston College, Miami and Virginia Tech.
One factor to keep in mind is that Fox is now the official network of the Big East, and one ACC coach said that ESPN would like to wrest control of the Garden?s postseason tournament from Fox.
?I don?t think you can underestimate the power of ESPN wanting to have a league tournament back in the Garden and that certainly isn?t the case now given that Fox has the Garden and the Big East,? the ACC coach told SNY.tv.
?I think the perfect world would be just like the ACC has done. They?ve rotated to other cities, New York City being part of the rotation.?
Incoming ACC coaches Rick Pitino of Louisville,?Jim Boeheim of Syracuse, Jamie Dixon?of Pittsburgh and Mike Brey?of Notre Dame are all in favor of moving the event to the Garden.
?You ask any kid,? Brey told reporters July 1 when new schools officially joined the ACC, according to the Newport News. ?I don?t care if he?s playing at Miami, Clemson, Wake Forest,?Notre Dame, BC, Virginia Tech, they want to play in the Garden. They want to experience that. ? You talk to the kids in the Big East, some of their greatest memories are playing in New York City.?
?I?think it would be awesome,? BC coach Steve Donahue told SNY.tv of potentially moving the event to the Garden.
?It?s the best conference and you want to play it in the most exciting arena in the biggest city. And it would be great for everybody, not just the teams in the North. I think it it?s something our league would really benefit greatly from, the excitement.?
N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried agrees.
?Selfishly for our fans and for us, I like Greensboro but I also think playing in New York City brings a level of prestige to the league maybe that nowhere else can in the world,? he told SNY.tv.
?I think it?s something that our league really needs to evaluate and take a hard look at it and go from there.?

Marwa El Daly
Marwa El Daly is the founder and chairperson of the Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation in Egypt. Updating the concept of waqf, a centuries old form of philanthropy in the Arabic and Islamic tradition, her foundation is a community led trust that shifts giving from charity to development.
City Press caught up with El Daly before the violent protests last week. Post revolution, her organisation plays an important role in Egypt around public accountability. In 2012 she received the African Grantmakers Network African Philanthropy Award. Social justice is her passion. She lives in Cairo.
Q: Since the 2011 revolution in Egypt, has it been harder or easier for your organisation to attract funds?
A: The revolution was the greatest landmark in our history. It was the spark that brought all of us together and made us realise that we can make miracles together. Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation?s job became easier in post-revolution Egypt because people found this body where they can make change happen. Mobilising people for talks, clean ups and fundraising for projects became easier because the sense of belonging and determination made people come to us in hundreds, not us going to them ? Waqfeya became the place that they trusted would give them a place to express their love for the community.
Q: You have been recognised as a ?social entrepreneur?. What is that?
A: Yes, I was recognised by Ashoka (a global organisation that invests in social entrepreneurs) in 2007 and in 2011, by Synergos (a New York based organisation addressing poverty and social injustice) as an Arab World Social Innovator. Ashoka recognised me for my philanthropic work in the region and for creating the first model of a community foundation that revives the waqf endowment model. This is a traditional form of giving that was the backbone of civil society until the 19th century that started to completely fade out in the 50s of the 20th century, when the government became the sole provider of services ? even for charity. Synergos selected me as a social entrepreneur for my effort in mobilising youth for change-driven philanthropy.
Q: If community philanthropy starts at home, where is home for you?
A: Home for me is ?us? wherever we are ? it is the strengths and resources that we have no matter what the challenges are. As a child at school I realised the importance of being responsible for the wellbeing of our family, community and all the people who are less fortunate. It was my mother who inspired me through good education that we cannot sleep well if our neighbour is hungry. It was not about giving our neighbour food, because she taught me that if giving them food undermines their dignity, then we do them more harm than good. So it was about creating an avenue for them to be able to get their own food with dignity and pride. It was about the bonds that allow us to find solutions together, the trust and belief in our strengths and the conviction that giving to empower each other empowers all of us.
Q: Is your interest in youth projects informed by your own relative youth?
A: It?s not that I?m interested in ?youth projects? but youth are integral partners of Waqfeyat al Maadi CF. They are not our target group, but our partners. In the Youth Engagement Project, youths decide our community projects, design them, fundraise for them and support their implementation.They support other social entrepreneurs and give them whatever psychological and financial support they can. The board comprises younger and older generations, female and male, different religions. As a young woman, although now in my 30s, I feel we are all young ? a young vibrant organisation where age plays no role but where there is a young spirit that believes in change.
Q: The Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation uses art to bridge divides and bring diverse youth together. How does it do this?
A: The first project at Waqfeyat al Maadi CF was launched by Dr Fatma Abou Nawareg ? my mother. She is the former dean and current Professor of Art Appreciation at Helwan University, who inaugurated the Khan el Fenoun art education project as a tool to attract community members of all ages in a peaceful and beautiful environment. It was also an income-generating project endowed to allow the less fortunate to have the same opportunity to art education in a sustainable manner because of Dr Fatma?s belief that art is the tool that shapes appreciation of our environment, thinking, and the ability to change from an early age. Last but not least, the art workshop brings people from privileged and underprivileged communities together in collective art works that they exhibit together. This creates bonds and mutual respect and pride, but also creates individuals that are more sensitive to each other?s feelings and challenges.
Q: Are you an arts lover?
A: I do love the arts myself, yes ? Dr Fatma is both my mother and my inspiration. Appreciating arts provides the soul with sensitivity to nature, trees, vegetables, mountains, animals, insects and, of course, to human beings. I love drawing and photography and find them powerful tools to bring inner strengths and an eye to the environment around us.
Q: What kind of philanthropist would you describe yourself as?
A: I am a believer in social justice philanthropy, where giving in any form is directed to solve root causes of poverty, deprivation or any kind of injustice. My interest is to invest in change-driven philanthropy that brings people out of the vicious circle of poverty and dependence and helps them have equal access to opportunities and resources.
Q: You?re active on the digital social networks ? Facebook, Twitter etc. Does this help to spread the word and your work?
A: I am very active on social media ? and WMCF counts on Facebook and Twitter to mobilise people and we have more than 3000 active followers who participate in our community carnivals, events and fundraise for Waqfeya projects. For us social media is an integral part of our work ? it connects not only our communities but also connects us globally with other community foundations and youth groups. All our photo albums are on Facebook and this allows for visibility and engagement.
Q: What was your first philanthropy project and how did it make you feel?
A: My first project was in my school years and it was a series of libraries that we helped establish in underprivileged areas and in children?s hospitals in Egypt, especially the cancer-treatment centers. We used books to get children to become philanthropists and give away their books. We gathered thousands from us ? teen philanthropists ? and created many libraries across Egypt and organised school trips to them. I was 12 years old, and the inspiration was my mother who always guided me with three secret words: love, commitment and justice for all.

Councilman Leroy Comrie today announced an end to his bid for Queens borough president, citing ?personal matters? as his reason for leaving the race.
?After careful consideration, my family and I believe, due to personal matters, this is the best course of action,? Mr. Comrie said in a statement. ?I remain steadfast in my faith and belief in government and it is a true honor to continue to serve the people of Southeast Queens in my capacity as Councilman.?
Mr. Comrie surprised some in the political establishment when he decided to continue his campaign after the Queens Democratic Party in May endorsed a rival candidate, Melinda Katz. Despite mulling leaving the race, Mr. Comrie continued to score endorsements, including former Mayor David Dinkins, and held a campaign kickoff event last month on the steps of Queens Borough Hall.
Queens Democratic insiders weren?t sure about the legitimacy of Mr. Comrie?s campaign, however. Some had predicted, accurately ultimately, that he would eventually exit the race around the time when petitions were due to be handed in this week. He remains close to the county organization and would have complicated Ms. Katz?s path to victory against rivals like Councilman Peter Vallone Jr., a strong fund-raiser.
Mr. Comrie, who is term-limited, has been a rumored candidate for deputy borough president or even the sseat occupied by indicted State Senator Malcolm Smith. With his exit, only Ms. Katz, Mr. Vallone Jr. and State Senator Tony Avella remain in the Democratic primary.
?Queens is one of the greatest boroughs in ?our city, ?and I am thankful to everyone for the opportunity ?to showcase my ?platform for inclusion and empowerment and express my passion for the borough that was afforded me in this race,? Mr. Comrie said. ?I am looking forward to ?serving ?the people of Queens?in one capacity or another?for a long time to come.?

DREAMers and the LGBT community gathered together in Washington D.C. yesterday to take part in two ceremonies -- the National DREAM Act Graduation and a marriage between a bi-national lesbian couple -- and show their support for equality for all.
?This year, especially because we are focusing on comprehensive immigration reform, they decided to include certain LGBT components and have a DREAM wedding,? says Ameesha Sampat, the media manager for Immigration Equality. The graduation has happened before, but from what I saw today, with the two different movements coming together, the wedding stole the show.?
NBC Latino reports that every year, the National Immigrant Youth Alliance partners with DREAM Activist to present the National DREAM Graduation at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation of Washington, D.C.
Almost 300 people RSVP'd to support the annual graduation and the marriage of an "undocuqueer" couple to highlight the intersectionality between immigration and LGBT rights.

Back in May, Google outlined improved notifications for the beta version of Chrome, and now the feature's finally ready for prime time, if you're a Windows user rocking the browser. The refresh brings a revamped interface to the pop-ups, featuring text and images. Actions can also occur inside the notifications, so users can do things like respond to e-mails without clicking out of the window. If you miss a bunch of notifications, you can open them all at once -- and if you get annoyed, you can just disable them. The Windows version is available now. Mac users will get the update "soon," as per the blog post below.

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York City has taken control of the South Street Seaport Museum.
It continues to struggle with an estimated $22 million in damage from Superstorm Sandy.
The Museum of the City of New York said last month it could no longer operate the waterfront museum.
The Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/1aROPjV ) says three Bloomberg administration officials now make up a skeleton board of trustees. Meanwhile, the city is scrambling to find a new institutional partner.
The museum's waterfront director has been appointed as its interim president.
The museum is housed in a commercial building on Fulton Street that served the seaport starting in 1811. It also maintains a fleet of historic vessels.

Less than 70 hours removed from the official announcement that Brad Stevens was leaving for the Boston Celtics, Butler has named his successor.
Brandon Miller, a former point guard at the university and 2003 alumnus, will take over for Stevens. The 34-year-old Miller returned to Butler in April to be an assistant after spending last season as an assistant coach to John Groce at Illinois. Prior to that he was on Thad Matta's staff for six years at Ohio State. Matta, a Butler alum, spent one year as coach of the Bulldogs, in 2000-01.
"I am confident that Brandon will carry on the Butler University basketball tradition of excellence, especially as we make the transition to the Big East Athletic Conference," Butler athletic director Barry Collier said in a statement. "As a player, assistant coach, and person, Brandon has exemplified the Butler Way and brings a blend of energy, talent and integrity to this role. With Brandon's leadership, Butler is well-positioned to expand upon the success of the last few years."
Miller hails froms New Castle, Ind., and went 77-20 during his playing career, winning three Horizon League titles and becoming one of eight players in program history to score 1,000 points in three seasons. In 2003, he helped get the Bulldogs to the Sweet 16.
The hire comes just as the July recruiting period is about to get underway. Considered a critical month in the coaching calendar, it's when programs across the country travel to see hordes of talent in multiple cities and build on recruiting classes for the next two or three years.

Here?s the trailer for ?Coffee Town,? which College Humor will release Tuesday as its first feature-length movie. The online comedy site has done Web series before, but it is largely known for its short videos.
The film about a coffee house and its odd customers will debut on Apple iTunes, Amazon and other online outlets, and will be marketed via social means by the IAC-owned College Humor. It?s yet another in the list of more ambitious content efforts that are made for the Web.
