Lemon Wallet Releases Android App, Lemon Business | TechCrunch

Mobile wallet platform Lemon released an Android application and a Smarter Wallet Business Plan today.

The company, which launched?in late 2011 and recently raised $8 million in Series A, claims that over two million customers have used Lemon?s mobile wallet platform. The wallet only launched last month, yet they claim over half a million credit cards have been scanned.

Lemon says they are targeting a portion of the market ignored by Google Wallet, Square and others, helping users organize and use their money better.

Android users will be able to download the app from Google Play for any Android 4.0 or higher smartphone, with similar experiences to the iOS app.

Founder and CEO Wences Casares tells me the company developed Lemon Business after many consumer-side customers, many of whom are lawyers and consultants, asked Lemon for tools to process business expenses. Users can submit receipts directly to their employer for reimbursement through the app (say goodbye to those expense reports!), which Lemon says is secure, trackable and IRS compliant.

?Our new Lemon for Business offering is designed to eliminate tiresome tracking and endless expense report paperwork that is burdensome for all sides of the reporting process,? Casares said in a press release. ?There are no hardware costs, no IT upkeep, and the app is highly secure, while also meeting IRS expense tracking requirements.?

Lemon Business is available from $6.99 to $9.99 per employee per month, depending on the number of employees you have. For consumers, there is a basic, free Lemon and Lemon Pro ($9.99 per month), with extra features (duh).

While I personally haven?t started using the app, I would love to get rid of paper receipts, both for personal spending and reimbursements. Of course, as my boss? parody Twitter account (how many people can say that?) points out, the simplification isn?t always as good as it seems.

Graphene re-knits its holes

ScienceDaily (July 29, 2012) ? Scientists at The University of Manchester and the SuperSTEM facility at STFC's Daresbury Laboratory have discovered that the 'miracle material', graphene, undergoes a self repairing process to mend holes.

This research, published in Nano Letters, could hold the key in the quest to realise graphene's huge potential for use in fields from electronics to medicine.

Graphene, which is made of sheets of carbon just one atom thick, is a promising material for a wide range of future applications due, for instance, to its exceptional electronic properties.

The team, led by Professor Kostya Novoselov, who shared a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010 for exploiting the remarkable properties of graphene's, was originally looking to gain a deeper understanding into how metals interact with graphene, essential if it is to be integrated into practical electronic devices in the future.

The researchers were using a powerful electron microscope at the SuperSTEM Laboratory at Daresbury, which allows scientists to study the properties of materials one atom at a time. They recently demonstrated that metals can initiate the formation of holes in the graphene sheet, which could be hugely detrimental to the properties of any graphene-based device.

Surprise results then showed that some of the holes that had been created during this process were actually mending themselves spontaneously using nearby loose carbon atoms to re-knit the graphene structure.

Dr Quentin Ramasse, Scientific Director at SuperSTEM said: "This was a very exciting and unexpected result. The fact that graphene can heal itself under the right conditions may be the difference between a working device and a proof of concept without any real application. We may now have a way of not only drilling through graphene in a controlled fashion to sculpt it at the atomic level, but also to grow it back in new shapes. This adds a lot of flexibility to our nanotechnology toolbox and could pave the way to future technological applications."

SuperSTEM (link opens in a new window) is the EPSRC National Facility for Aberration Corrected STEM and is run by a consortium of universities, consisting of Leeds, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Oxford. Other collaboration agreements with the external partner universities Cambridge, Sheffield, Warwick and York will be commencing shortly and the facility has received ?4.5M funding from EPSRC.

Facebook's stock sinks, so who should buy it?

NEW YORK (AP) - Investors are dumping Facebook's stock, spooked by slowing revenue growth, the lack of a financial outlook and plans to spend more money in the coming months.

Are they right?

Only if they are thinking in the short term. Investors can expect Facebook's stock to be volatile for a few years. But analysts say those willing to wait will likely be rewarded - someday.

"I view it as a tomorrow stock," says Christian Bertelsen, chief investment officer at wealth management firm Global Financial Private Capital.

"The whole thing on Facebook is, look, if your time horizon is hourly, weekly or even monthly, this is not the stock for you," he adds. "You need to take a much longer-term view on it."

That's about three or four years, he says.

Founded in CEO Mark Zuckerberg's Harvard dorm room in 2004, Facebook was a product of the PC era. Now, in the age of mobile computing, a growing number of people are accessing Facebook through their iPhones, Android gadgets and tablet computers. Yet Facebook is only now starting to figure out how to make money from its mobile audience.

"The company is going through an almost painful transition from desktop to mobile," Baird analyst Colin Sebastian says.

He calls Facebook "a speculative investment," but one with plenty of potential.

"With almost one billion users, Facebook is amassing the most comprehensive user profile database in existence," Sebastian says. This, he adds, offers a "significant opportunity" to reap a big chunk of the global advertising market, which is currently at $500 billion a year.

"Amazon comes to mind immediately," Bertelsen says.

After that company went public in 1997, at the time mainly just an online bookstore, critics were quick to cry dot-com bust, call its business a broken, and so on. Today, it is the world's biggest online retailer, selling everything from DVDs to vacuum cleaners to Web storage.

"Now they are the retailer to the world," he adds.

Amazon.com Inc.'s stock price grew to more than $200 a share, from less than $2. Of course, Facebook has started out much higher, at $38.

Facebook's first earnings report since its rocky initial public offering on May 18 was the second coming that didn't quite materialize. So investors sent Facebook's stock to its lowest level ever on Friday. Shares fell $3.14, or nearly 12 percent, to close at $23.71 after hitting $22.28 in the morning. The previous low was $25.52, reached on June 6.

The stock dropped despite the fact that Facebook's second-quarter results met Wall Street's expectations, with revenue one-third higher than last year.

Given the rocky economy and investors' heightened sensitivity to a stock's value, betting on a company becomes a "show-me story" for many of them, Sebastian says. That means investors want proof rather than Facebook's word that it can grow its revenue and make a profit.

Facebook, for now, is more of a tell-me story, one whose success or failure will play out in the coming quarters, or even years. The company hasn't shown all it can do. Its revenue growth slowed. The company's revenue nearly tripled in 2010, compared with 2009.

In the first quarter of this year, revenue climbed 44 percent, higher than the 32 percent increase in the second quarter. Following in Google's footsteps, it did not offer financial guidance for the coming quarters, which makes it a riskier bet for investors.

Facebook also said it plans to increase its investments in the coming quarters. Higher expenses could mean lower profits.

Facebook, which is based in Menlo Park, Calif., was valued at $104 billion when it went public two months ago. That means investors placed a higher value on its stock than established companies such as McDonald's, Pepsi and even Amazon.

With Facebook's stock hitting a new low on Friday, the company lost as much as 39 percent of its value. It's now around $66 billion, a little more than 3M, the company that makes Scotch tapes, stethoscopes and sandpaper. It's also in the same range as American Express.

Despite the doubts, Mike Magan of Carmel, Ind., plans to keep the 10 shares he bought at $34.25 each a few days after Facebook went public.

"I bought this thinking it was going to be something I was going to pass down to my kids," said Magan, who works for an industrial marketing firm. "I see this as a company that will be an Apple."

Other stocks he owns include Apple, naturally, which he bought a decade ago. Back then, it was trading at around $8 to $10. Now, it's pushing $600 as the world's most valuable company, thanks to successes with the iPhone and the iPad - the same devices confounding Facebook.

"My purchase of Facebook was a vote of confidence," Magan says, adding that he buys stock about every three to four years.

Analysts are generally positive on Facebook. Of the 27 analyst ratings available from FactSet, 15 are "Buy" or equivalent, while just three are a "Sell." Analysts tend to have longer-term views of stocks than many day-to-day investors.

"We don't view these results as dramatically good or bad," Citi analyst Mark Mahaney says. "Key questions remain: the future of Facebook mobile monetization and the future of Facebook user engagement."

It has raised prices, also to improve profitability, resulting in fewer new FiOS subscribers ? 134,000 during the quarter, to end with 5.1 million.

? Tuesday: AT&T Inc. says it gained 553,000 U-verse Internet customers to end the quarter with 6.5 million. That helped offset losses in customers who get DSL, a slower and older technology.

? Wednesday: AOL Inc. says it had 3 million access subscribers as of June 30, down 84,000 during the quarter.

BHOPAL, India (AP) ? Dozens of giggling children in wheelchairs or limping on twisted limbs raced for gold Thursday in their own "Special Olympics" organized in an effort to shame London Games sponsor Dow Chemical Co. over the deadly 1984 Bhopal gas leak.

Cheered on by parents and activists, the children ? teenagers and kids as young as 5 who have birth defects blamed on their parents' exposure to the gas ? struggled across distances they normally would not attempt in spirited competition. One little boy ran laps back and forth on the patchy field even when no race was on.

A pesticide plant run by Union Carbide leaked about 40 tons of deadly methyl isocyanate gas into the air, killing an estimated 15,000 people and affecting at least 500,000 more, according to government estimates. Activists say thousands of children have been born with brain damage, missing palates and twisted limbs because of their parents' exposure to the gas or to contaminated water.

Having failed to get Dow's Olympic sponsorship quashed, Bhopal activists carried through with their threat to hold their own "Olympics" the day before the London Games' opening ceremony to showcase the devastation caused by the gas leak.

The Bhopal "Olympics" began with children with cerebral palsy, partial paralysis and mental disability parading in wheelchairs and walking with the assistance of others around a rundown, outdoor stadium overlooking the old pesticide plant.

Events included a crab race on all fours, wheelchair races and an "assisted walking" 25-meter sprint.

Jamila Bi brought her wheelchair-bound 11-year-old grandson, Amaan, who has cerebral palsy.

"Today these children are participating, in spite of what Union Carbide did to them," Bi said. "We are happy that they will walk. Those people will see that in spite of what they did these children are still participating."

Some children carried brooms to symbolize their demand that Dow clean up the plant. Others in the concrete stands held banners reading "Dow Poisons" or "Don't let Dow Chem contaminate Olympics." Placards suggested Dow's participation in London should make one "ashamed to be a Brit."

Dow, which is sponsoring a decorative sheath around London's Olympic Stadium, was trying to use the Games to wash away its responsibility to the people of Bhopal, said Satinath Sarangi, a protest organizer.

"Dow Chemical as a sponsor violates the very spirit of the Olympics," he said.

Survivors say Dow should pay $8 billion in compensation to the victims and their families and clean up the soil and groundwater around the plant.

In a statement, Dow expressed sympathy with the victims but accused activists of trying to rewrite history. The company reiterated that it never owned the pesticide plant. It is linked to the tragedy because 16 years later, in 2001, it bought the Union Carbide Corporation, an American company that had a majority stake in the Bhopal plant.

Dow says the legal case was resolved in 1989 when Union Carbide settled with the Indian government for $470 million, and that all responsibility for the factory now rests with the government of the state of Madhya Pradesh, which now owns the site.

"Those trying to attach Dow to the incident are misinformed or misguided," said Scot Wheeler, a Dow spokesman.

Investigators say the accident occurred when water entered a sealed tank containing the highly reactive gas, causing pressure in the tank to rise too high.

Union Carbide Corp. said the accident was an act of sabotage by a disgruntled employee who was never identified. It has denied the disaster was the result of lax safety standards or faulty plant design, as claimed by some activists.

The Bhopal activists are also using their protest to try to embarrass the British for what they say is a lengthy history of oppression of their former colony.

NEW YORK (AP) ? AT&T Inc. on Tuesday said that it saw declining smartphone sales in the second quarter, leading to the best profitability ever in its wireless arm as it saves on phone subsidies.

The largest telecommunications company in the U.S. says it activated 5.1 million smartphones in its latest quarter, down from 5.5 million in the same period a year ago.

Much of the decline came because AT&T subscribers are holding on to their phones longer: the company said the rate of upgrades to new phones was at a record low.

That's good news for the company because the company subsidizes each smartphone by hundreds of dollars to be able to sell it to customers for $99 or $199. IPhones, in particular, are expensive to sell, because Apple charges an average of around $650 for each one.

However, AT&T charges subscribers an "upgrade fee" on top of the price of the new phone. It raised that fee from $18 to $36 this year, which may have helped dampen the number of upgrades.

But tighter upgrade policies don't seem to be scaring off AT&T subscribers. They were more loyal than ever in the quarter, helping AT&T outdo analyst expectations by adding a net 320,000 subscribers on postpaid plans in the quarter.

However, more than half of the new subscribers were tablet users, who pay less than smartphone users. Also, AT&T continues to lag Verizon Wireless, which already has more subscribers. Last week, Verizon reported adding 888,000 subscribers to its rolls in the quarter.

Analysts still expect AT&T's profits to take a dive later this year, when the new iPhone comes out. In a yearly ritual, buyers flood AT&T and Apple stores, and AT&T pays dearly for the privilege of having the nation's most popular network for iPhones.

The strong wireless results helped boost Dallas-based AT&T net income rise to $3.9 billion, or 66 cents per share, for the April to June period. That's up 8.7 percent from $3.6 billion, or 60 cents per share, a year earlier.

For the latest quarter, analysts expected earnings of 63 cents per share.

Revenue edged up 0.3 percent to $31.6 billion. Analysts were expecting $31.7 billion. If it weren't for the sale of its phone-books business in May, revenue would have risen 2 percent.

AT&T sold a controlling stake in the Yellow Pages division to private-equity firm Cerberus Capital for $950 million. The unit was profitable but shrinking, and AT&T wants to be a growing company.

AT&T shares slipped 10 cents to $35.28 in morning trading Tuesday. The shares are still close to a three-year high of $36.21 hit three weeks ago.

Moreover, they found that haematocrit measured at the patients? first clinic visit predicted future blood pressure levels ? those with higher haematocrit at the first visit tend to have higher blood pressure over a 10-year follow-up period.

Hypertension is the most common preventable cause of premature death in the UK affecting over a quarter of adults ? and over half of those over 60 years of age. Although current management guidelines focus on getting blood pressure down to a specific target, the risk associated with increasing blood pressure is continuous, with each 2 mmHg rise in systolic blood pressure associated with a 7% increased risk of mortality from ischaemic heart disease and a 10% increased risk of mortality from stroke. ?

The Glasgow Blood Pressure clinic at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow is one of the largest and the longest running blood pressure clinics in the world. Over 16,000 patients have been managed at this clinic since 1968 and the clinical database is now providing valuable insights into predictors of risk that will benefit hypertensive patients everywhere.

Dr Sandosh Padmanabhan, Reader in the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, who led the study said: ?Finding new biomarkers that predict disease or risk is the Holy Grail for medical researchers.

?This study shows that there is valuable predictive information that can be obtained from blood tests that are routinely performed in out-patient clinics and primary care. Haematocrit, for example, is very useful in assessment and management of hospital in-patients who are very sick, but we show that this parameter can also be useful in predicting risk in out-patient and primary care settings.

?While haematocrit is routinely reported as part of a full blood count, it is not routinely examined in office clinical practice. What we have shown is that, in patients with hypertension, haematocrit levels outwith the gender-specific optimal ranges identified in this study should be targeted for more aggressive blood pressure and cardiovascular risk reduction treatment.?

The research ?Hematocrit predicts long-term mortality in a non-linear and sex-specific manner in hypertensive adults? is published in the journal Hypertension.

Advice For Enforcing Tenant Rights | The Rental Standard

Tenants in Brooklyn apartments have laws governing their relationship with their landlords. By learning their legal rights, tenants can figure out exactly what they are able to do while they are renting. Each state has its own set of rules and regulations, but most states have many of the same regulations. Before entering into a contractual agreement, tenants should figure out what their rights are so they will not be surprised in the future. If a renter feels their rights were violated, they should contact a qualified attorney who has experience in dealing with landlord and tenant arrangements.

Common Obligations

Most tenants will have to live up to these obligations. As long as they live on the landlord?s premises, they will have to fulfill all of the terms of the lease. Tenants are required to pay their rent by the due date every month. If the check bounces or they miss a payment, tenants will have to pay for any late fees. While they are living on the property, tenants cannot sublet or allow additional renters to move in without the landlord consenting to the new arrangement.

Tenants are also expected to take out their garbage in a timely manner. Trash is not allowed to build up within the unit or be deposited on the street without a dumpster or trash can. Likewise, the rest of the property has to be maintained properly and should not be intentionally damaged. If the property is damaged beyond normal usage, renters who are living in Brooklyn real estate may be expected to pay a fee to the landlord or have their security deposit forfeited.

The Rights of the Tenant

In return for fulfilling these obligations, tenants are granted certain rights while they live on the property. The landlord is not permitted to enter the rental property unless the tenant agrees to allow them in writing. The renter is also allowed to have any issues with the property addressed and mended quickly. During the rental process, the landlord is not allowed to discriminate against the prospective renter on the basis of race, age, religion or gender.

Once the rental contract is complete, the tenant has the right to have their security deposit returned to them. If they damaged the property in any way, the landlord may deduct the cost of fixing the rental unit. The landlord may also deduct any unpaid rent or fees.

While they are renting the property, the tenant has to be informed of any changes to the lease. These changes must be sent in writing to the renter. If the lease arrangement is going to be terminated, the landlord must give the tenant proper notice beforehand.

To sum it up, tenants have the legal right to:

- Be notified of a landlord visiting in advance
- Have the property fixed in a timely manner
- Have the right to their security deposit
- Be notified by the landlord about any changes to the lease
- Not to be discriminated against

Enforcing Renters Rights

If any the tenant has their rights violated, they can seek help. There are many different organizations and governmental programs that can help tenants get the help they need. For larger issues, tenants should contact a qualified attorney in their state. With all of the nuances of state law, tenants will need a lawyer experienced in landlord and tenant law. An attorney can help a tenant to navigate legal matters and get their rights enforced. ?Renters do not have to put up with having their rights violated. Every tenant has the right to live in a safe and hospitable environment. If a landlord is violating their side of the rental agreement, the renter is always allowed to seek help.

Chips are a summer food we always enjoy in my house. This year my son has loved to say "Chips" for some reason the word cracks him up. He will point to the cupboard and ask for chips with his lunch.

We had our chips as a snack during the afternoon while we played video games and watched cartoons. I really enjoyed the plain potato chips too. They had a great crunch and were not greasy. We served some with a clam dip for dinner with steak. It was a hit.

Stutzman and William Snyder meet with local farmers and business owners to discuss joining together to open a potato chip factory. The Berlin Brothersvalley Industrial Association of Berlin, PA, is formed.

March 1946

Stock is sold to finance construction of our original 120 x 100 foot building at the East End of town.

October 1946

Sent to learn the chip making operations, Norman Handwerk of Berlin returns from the Hanover plant with surplus machinery that he and his mechanics refurbish for use in the new factory.

February 9, 1947

Operations begin in Berlin with seven employees.

1950

Snyder operations in Hanover and Berlin part ways. The Sterner family assumes ownership of the Berlin operations.

1963

Upon the death of her husband, Edythe Snyder Sterner becomes president. Edythe and Barb's son, Gary Sterner, becomes general manager marking the fourth generation in the family's business.

1960s-1980s

Eleven additions are constructed around the original factory with new offices, manufacturing lines, storage and distribution facilities. The added space and success leads to the introduction of new product lines ? including corn chips, corn curls and popcorn.

1965

Continuous roll packaging machines begin the trend toward high speeed automation.

1972

Snyder is acquired as a division of Curtice Burns of Rochester, NY. Its association with the Pro-Fac Cooperative (Producers-Facilities) garners the commitments needed to satisfy market demand; farmers get a guaranteed market for their produce.

1994

Curtice Burns Foods becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Pro-Fac Cooperative.

1997

Curtice Burns changes its name to Agrilink Foods, Inc. to underscore the close relationship between farmers and processors.

1998

With the acquisition of the Birds Eye brand, Agrilink Foods doubles its size. In 2003 Agrilink changes its name to Birds Eye Foods, Inc. building on the prestige of the nationally recognized brand.

2009

Pinnacle Foods Group LLC completes the acquisition of Birds Eye Foods. Pinnacle Foods is a private equity portfolio company of the Blackstone Group.
