Bombing of Coptic church building in Libya kills 2

By Ali Shuaib, Reuters

TRIPOLI, Libya -- ?A bombing on Sunday at a building belonging to a Coptic church in western Libya killed two Egyptian men and wounded two others, a military spokesman said.

Attackers threw a homemade bomb at an administration building belonging to the Egyptian Coptic church in Dafniya, close to the western city of Misrata, said Ibrahim Rajab of the Misrata military council.

The Egyptian consul in the city, Tareq Dahrouj, said he visited the church and the building where the two church workers were killed early on Sunday.

"The explosion seems like it was very strong and I have started making my investigations with Misrata officials,'' he said.Libya has small communities of Egyptians, Greeks and Italians who account for most of the Christian minority in the predominantly Islamic country.

Libya's new rulers have struggled to impose their authority on myriad armed groups who helped oust dictator Moammar Gadhafi last year but have yet to lay down their arms. Sunday's attack was the first major assault on a Christian target since the revolution.

Coptic Christians in Egypt have become increasingly worried?after an upsurge in attacks on churches, which they blame on?hardline Islamists, in the wake of the removal from office in 2011 of President Hosni?Mubarak.

Repeated attacks on foreign diplomatic and aid centers in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi have made it very dangerous for non-locals to work and live there.

How to Grow Your Email List without Spamming | Modern Dignity ...

Email List

Are you eager to grow your email list from a high energy place? You can expand your online business and build a responsive, targeted list if you are willing to take a disciplined approach to your marketing strategy. First off, no low energy spamming tactics allowed. Stop forcing your squeeze page links on Facebook profiles or groups, or sending endless business links on Twitter all day long. ? These approaches are force-filled, and using force negates your marketing campaign. Come from a place of power with your list building efforts and you can attract targeted individuals to sign up for your offering quite quickly. Remember, all prospects flow to you. You need not chase potential list subscribers, for if you share interesting content on a persistent basis you will have no issues growing your list the right way.

Spam Free Listing Building: The Basics

You need to create value on a persistent basis to become valuable in the online arena. Yep, that means creating blog posts, videos and ebooks, to drive people to sign up for your list emails. In order to acquire people?s name and email address, as well as telephone number, you need to give them something to get excited about. You need to give them something that goads them to give up their name, email address and phone number. Too many entrepreneurs expect people to give up their contact information when you refuse to give them anything to sink their teeth into. This is silly, and a quite stupid way to attempt to grow your list. Why would anybody give you anything of value if you refuse to share something of value with them? Nope, not going to happen. You need to give people something of value if you expect to receive something of value. This is list building 101, one of the basic tenants that successful email list builders subscribe to persistently.

Slow and Steady Wins the List Building Race

Without exception, list greediness is one of the pitfalls of running a list. You know, feeling the need to get 50 opt ins on the first day you attempt to build your list. Another nasty habit? comparing yourself to other people. Established people in your niche might attract 10, 20 or even 30 people a day to their list. If you receive 1 or 2, or 5 opt-ins, after a few weeks, you might throw up your hands in disgust, bemoaning the fact that you are not keeping up with the competition, comparing yourself to others. This is a major league mistake, guaranteed to sabotage your list building efforts. You will likely move into low energy list building tactics, spamming people and forcing your opportunity onto individuals via unsolicited emails and other lame approaches which of course repel the people you are hungry to attract. Be patient. Slow and steady wins. ? Imagine yourself talking to 5 to 10 people each day over the course of a year? You might generate 3, 5 or 10 opt-ins each day. Even if you attracted 2 or 3 new subscribers each day this number grows a great deal over the course of a month, or year.? 5 subscribers each day over a month means 150 opt ins at the end of the month. No bad, really, and as you keep at it, the number generally rises each day, and you will have 1000, or 2000 subscribers in no time. You will build a sizable and responsive list because you were patient, and persistent, in gaining subscribers. Stop chasing numbers. Create content. Make connections. Persist. ? Use these tips to grow your email list without spamming now.

The sons of Daniel Cleary, 46, were reported missing in metro Atlanta on Thursday when they did not return home from a visit with their father. The two were supposed to return Wednesday to their mother, who is divorced from Cleary, police said. An Amber Alert was issued on Thursday afternoon.

Police said they did not know if Daniel Cleary was in possession of a firearm when he was taken into custody.?

South Africa: Mandela convalesces at home

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South Africa's presidency says it has no updates on the condition of former leader Nelson Mandela, who is convalescing at home after a hospital stay and is reported to be doing better.

The South African Press Association quotes presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj as saying Saturday that he has no new information on 94-year-old Mandela, who was released from a hospital on Wednesday. The former president, who spent 27 years in prison under apartheid, was admitted Dec. 8 and received treatment for a lung infection.

He also had a procedure to remove gallstones.

Maharaj previously said doctors have noted progress in Mandela's condition but will continue to treat him at his home in the Johannesburg neighborhood of Houghton.

So that is why you must do the work in terms of discovering what your market is all about. New products are launched on the Internet every single day. Some of these bomb while some make a huge impact. The initial product day launch is very special because it is one of the greatest day for This is the day when your product can gain massive leverage in the market and do thousands of dollars in online sales. In addition, the launch day is the day that you can make tons of money, if you know how to do it. Does that make you realize how important it is to have the right launch for your product? Below are some of the things that you should not forget when launching your product. Hype up the Launch: When you?re doing a product launch, the aim should be on selling the event to the people, instead of selling the product. In order to succeed with your product launch, you should focus on the actual date and make it stand out in people?s minds. If you have the capability of making your customers anxious about your product launch, then you will definitely create a huge buzz about this event. Selling the event will eventually help you sell more products because you have gotten so much attention. The product will have no problem selling itself when you make your focused market want it so much. It is that easy. We all get excited about events. So, why not utilize this to your advantage? Before the product is launched, your focus should be to make the customers want the product so much that they cannot wait to make a purchase. Understand Your Product?s USP: When looking to launch a product, you need to know how important it is to make it different from everything else on the market. Having a unique selling proposition is something that no Internet marketer can ignore; it doesn?t matter what niche your product is being launched in, as long as you understand the value of having a USP you?re good to go. Be sure to do your homework before hitting the launch button, and research and review to make sure you get it right. Failing to get your USP right can keep you from making a huge impact with your launch. We are confident many would like to take advantage of the full power of click here in their internet business; but you have to be careful and avoid proceeding with limited knowledge in your campaigns. Obviously there is tremendous variation among small web business owners when it comes to knowledge base about marketing techniques. One answer to this perpetual problem has been marketing forums because you can get acquainted with people who are doing the same things as you. We make every effort to cover as much as we can when we produce our articles, but just remember you will be receiving an incomplete set of guidelines. So much of what happens in online business is the result of someone deciding to test something out and it leads to something new. Update Your Joint Venture Partners: The most important thing about launching a successful online product is how well you stay in touch with your joint venture partners before your launch the product. If you want your joint venture partners to give you their approval, then you have to tell them what is going on with the product. Always keep them advised. Being trustworthy when it comes to your joint venture partners will make a large difference for when you launch your product. In addition, you should attempt to score more joint venture partners before launching the product. This is because the larger number of joint venture partners that you have, the more of an impact it will have. All products launched online can potentially be huge, especially if the pre-launch is planned out. You can get hundreds of sales from your product launch if you use the tips discussed above to build a strong foundation.

Unlocked iPhone 5 on T-Mobile worth it? or Nexus 4?

Hey there. I would like to start out by saying that I have been an Android user for 3 years now on T-Mobile. I dont want to say im anit-Apple, but more of im just not a fan of Apple products. (Im a big pc nerd, been building PCs for 5 years now) The only thing im a fan of is iPod. But recently with the iPhone 5 being out, I have actually started to like the iPhone more. Mainly because it finally now has a 16:9 screen, which is a huge deal for me. Also im sick of Android not having good development. Everything for mobile is made for iPhone first and then usually terribly ported to Android. Also I like the fact of having both my iPod and phone in one.

Ok so here are my problems. Since im on T-Mobile, I will have to get an unlocked iPhone 5. (And yes it has to be a 5 because i cant deal with the smaller square screen) One is the price, and two is the network. Since T-Mobile's network does not fully work with the iPhone I would get either 3g or Edge depending on where im at. Since I live about 40 minutes south of Chicago I should be fine on getting 3g most of the time. But next year in the fall of 2013 ill be going to Southern Illinois University where there is no 3g tower. Also im not sure if you know about it. But the head CEO of T-Mobile came out and said on December 6th, 2012 that T-Mobile will be getting LTE in 2013 and that they will be carrying "Apple Products".

The other problem is the cost. To get an unlocked iPhone 5 16gb is $650 which is a lot. But on the other hand I will only technically be paying around $200 for it because I will be selling my HTC Amaze 4g which sells for about $200-250 on ebay. Also my iPod Touch 4th generation 32gb which also sells for about $200 on ebay. With this said its still a lot to say Im spending $650 just on a phone.

So with all of this said what do you guys think? My main concern is the network. I will technically be downgrading since I do have a 4g device now. But I also have read that the 3g is the same speed as normal T-Mobile 4g. Also my other option is going with a Nexus 4 for only $299. (But im getting really sick of waiting for it to come back in stock.) So what do you guys say? Unlocked iPhone 5? or stick with Android and wait for the Nexus 4?

Thanks, Kenny

Twitter Ye Not: Louis keeps his MBE a secret as he heads for a night out in Peterborough before the honour is announced

By John Elworthy Saturday, December 29, 2012
1:24 PM

A LITTLE after 9pm last night, Strictly Come Dancing winner and Olympic gymnast Louis Smith tweeted to his followers: ?Going out in Peterborough tonight?.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

For once the 23 year-old silver medallist ?who famously tweeted a Strictly result before it was aired- kept his own counsel by not revealing he was to made an MBE in the New Year?s Honours list.

Quite where he was at midnight when the world was able to share his joy, Twitter ? and his personal account now with 194,698 followers- doesn?t record.

A clue as to how he was feeling came via the BBC who Louis had told earlier the MBE was ?without a doubt the proudest moment of my life?.

His Team GB coach, Paul Hall, from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, was appointed MBE.

Smith told the BBC: ?To receive this honour is out of this world and something I never would have dreamt of as I grew up in the sport of gymnastics.

?This year has been like no other for so many reasons.

?I?ll never forget and I wasn?t sure it could get any better, but to be awarded an MBE is the icing on the cake.?

Smith said he was ?absolutely overjoyed? for Paul especially because of what he had done for himself, his team mates and the Huntingdon Gymnastics Club.

SpaceX's Grasshopper VTVL Finally Jumps Its Own Height

While the general tenor of your computation is in the right direction, you're not even closed to calculating the costs fairly. You're not being very rigorous with separating out capital vs operating expenditures. You are hitting shuttle launches with a share of all the development and infrastructure costs, but left that out for SpaceX.

But yes, the *incremental* cost of another shuttle launch is in the 500M range, which is still pretty pricey on a $/kg to orbit.

There are some aspects you've also sort of glossed over: Shuttle is a terrible way to get to GTO, so comparing GTO payload capacity isn't a good metric. Shuttle has the same 3000kg "downmass" capabilty, too, which I don't think F9 or GH have. If you want to bring things back for repair and refurbishment, that's a useful thing to have. Or, you could treat space like remote islands in the Aleutians.. never take anything back, and just dump the old stuff in an ever increasing pile out back for the amusement of workers on their time off.

That said, I think cheap expendable rockets like F9 are really the way to go for the immediate future.

Lose Stomach Fat By The Power Of Mind Techniques Of ... - Self Help

FasterEFT is the new EFT!images1 - Self improvement.

?

You can use the modern principles and techniques of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and Hypnotherapy to help you change and lose your stomach fat. Both these techniques have been used for some years to treat a number of ailments and issues. According to a leading practitioner, EFT and Hypnotherapy work very well together. EFT starts dealing with the issue very quickly and hypnotherapy takes it deeper.

Mind Over Matter

\?Mind over matter\? is an old saying, and it works. Most of us know we can change our mood or our attitude just by deciding to. We can condition our mind to be positive or negative. We can decide if we will look on the bright side of life or allow ourselves to get down in the dumps and feel sorry for ourselves. In fact, we can experience negative feelings many times but we can shake them off and pull ourselves out of the negativity. If we keep doing it often enough, it becomes a habit so that having a positive mental attitude is part of us. So, we know we can control our mind and our emotions.

Mind Control

Many people have used the principles of both EFT and Hypnotherapy to lose weight. They have used the power of their mind to take control of their lives. While these techniques were originally used to treat emotional issues and phobias ? poor relationships fear of failure fear of the dark claustrophobia fear of spiders ? they are now used more and more to deal with a number of other issues such as weight loss.In fact, you can learn and apply the techniques to deal with your own issues.

Power To Change Your Habits

The problem for most of us is we are conditioning our mind all the time automatically. We have several thousand thoughts every day and many of them reinforce the negative aspects of our lives: \?I don?t have time\? \?I eat too much\? \?I am too fat\? \?I am no good at? \? and so on. We can change this.

The basic principles to do this have been practiced by many people for a long time. Modern techniques have taken these principles further and have refined them so they are more effective. Now you can make changes in your life much faster and more effectively than in the past.

When you hear so many people claim their idea or product is ?life changing? it can make you sceptical because the phrase has become cliched. But people do change their lives and they are doing it all the time. They are losing weight, losing their stomach fat, becoming fitter and remaking themselves in many ways.

You can develop your power of mind by using the modern principles and techniques of Faster EFT and Hypnotherapy to help you change. These are effective tools to help you get what you want. Why not use them?

New turmoil hits Egypt's tourism

CAIRO (AP) ? At Egypt's Pyramids, the desperation of vendors to sell can be a little frightening for some tourists.

Young men descend on any car with foreigners in it blocks before it reaches the more than 4,500 year-old Wonder of the World. They bang on car doors and hoods, some waving the sticks and whips they use for driving camels, demanding the tourists come to their shop or ride their camel or just give money.

In the southern city of Aswan, tour operator Ashraf Ibrahim was recently taking a group to a historic mosque when a mob of angry horse carriage drivers trapped them inside, trying to force them to take rides. The drivers told Ibrahim to steer business their way in the future or else they'd burn his tourist buses, he said.

Egypt's touts have always been aggressive ? but they're more desperate than ever after nearly two years of devastation in the tourism industry, a pillar of the economy.

December, traditionally the start of Egypt's peak season, has brought new pain. Many foreigners stayed away because of the televised scenes of protests and clashes on the streets of Cairo in the battle over a controversial constitution.

Arrivals this month were down 40 percent from November, according to airport officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Tourism workers have little hope that things will get better now that the constitution came into effect this week after a nationwide referendum. The power struggle between Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and the opposition threatens to erupt at any time into more unrest in the streets.

More long term, many in the industry worry ruling Islamists will start making changes like banning alcohol or swimsuits on beaches that they fear will drive tourists away.

"Nobody can plan anything because one day you find that everything might be OK and another that everything is lost. You can't even take a right decision or plan for the next month," said Magda Fawzi, head of Sabena Management.

She's thinking of shutting down her company, which runs two hotels in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh and four luxury cruise boats on the Nile between the ancient cities of Luxor and Aswan. In one hotel, only 10 of 300 rooms are booked, and only one of her ships is operating, she said. She has already downsized from 850 employees before the revolution to 500.

"I don't think there will be any stability with this kind of constitution. People will not accept it," she said.

Tourism, one of Egypt's biggest foreign currency earners, was gutted by the turmoil of last year's 18-day uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Scared off by the upheaval, the number of tourists fell to 9.8 million in 2011 from 14.7 million the year before, and revenues plunged 30 percent to $8.8 billion.

This year, the industry struggled back. By the end of September, 8.1 million tourists had come, injecting $10 billion into the economy. The number for the full year is likely to surpass 2011 but is still considerably down from 2010.

For the public, it has meant a drying up of income, given that tourism provided direct or indirect employment to one in eight Egyptians in 2010, according to government figures.

Poverty swelled at the country's fastest rate in Luxor province, highly dependent on visitors to its monumental temples and the tombs of King Tutankamun and other pharaohs. In 2011, 39 percent of its population lived on less than $1 a day, compared to 18 percent in 2009, according to government figures.

For the government, the fall in tourism and foreign investment since the revolution has worsened a debt crisis and forced talks with the International Monetary Fund over a $4.8 billion loan.

Morsi has promised to expand tourism, but hotel owners and tour operators say he has yet to make clear any plans.

Their biggest fear is new violence causing shocks like December's. Ibrahim, of the Eagle Travels tourism company, said that because of this month's protests, two German operators he works with cancelled tours. They weren't even heading to Cairo, but to the Red Sea, Luxor and Aswan, far from the unrest.

But some in the industry fear that, with the constitution's provisions strengthening implementation of Shariah, Islamists will ban alcohol or restrict dress on Egypt's beaches, which rival antiquities sites as draws for tourism. Officials from the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, are vague about any plans.

Ultraconservative Salafis, who are key allies of Morsi, have been more direct.

Nader Bakkar, spokesman for the Salafi Nour Party, told a conference of tour guides in Aswan earlier this month that tourists should not be allowed to buy alcohol but could bring it with them and drink it in their rooms. Tourists should also be encouraged to wear conservative dress, he said.

"We welcome all tourists but we tell them ... there are traditions and beliefs in the country, so respect them," he said. "Most tourists will have no problem if you tell them" to bring their own alcohol.

One Salafi sheik earlier this year said the Pyramids and Sphinx should be demolished as anti-Islamic ? like Afghanistan's then-Taliban rulers destroyed monumental Buddha statues in 2001. Bakkar dismissed the comments as the opinion of one cleric.

But tour guide Gladys Haddad sees the Salafis' attitude as a threat, saying the constitution should have said more to protect Egypt's pharaonic heritage. "We are talking about a civilization that they do not acknowledge. They see it as idolatrous."

"Why would a tourist come to a resort if he can't drink?" said Fawzi, of Sabena Management. "People are coming for tours and monuments, and to relax on the boats. If they feel that restriction, why should they come?"

Nahla Mofied of Escapade Travels said the Islamists might restrict what tourists can "wear and do" but, given its importance to the economy, "they may not destroy tourism fully."

Complicating attempts to draw tourists back is the lawlessness gripping Egypt the past two years. With police supervision low, tourist touts increasingly assault guides and even tourists to demand business. In September, 150 tour guides held a protest against attacks by vendors.

"We have struggled with this problem since before the revolution, but now the situation is completely out of control," Ibrahim said.

At the Giza Pyramids, police seem indifferent to the touts. Camel-riding police even join in, pushing tourists to take rides.

Gomaa al-Gabri, an antiquities employee, was infuriated at the sight, shouting, "You sons of dogs" and a slew of other insults at a policeman trying to get money off a tourist.

"They're trying to take away my income," said the father of 11. "In Mubarak's time we wouldn't dare talk to them like this. Now I can hit him with a shoe on his head and he can't speak."

For some tourists at the Pyramids, the chaos is part of the experience.

"I just love it," British tourist Brian Wilson said. "You can't blame people wanting to make money."

Oil rises on housing data, 'fiscal cliff' talks

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil rose sharply Wednesday on higher U.S. home prices and hopes of a budget deal in Washington.

U.S. benchmark crude jumped $2.37, or 2.7 percent, to finish at $90.98 per barrel in thin post-Christmas trading in New York.

U.S. home prices rose in most major cities in October compared with a year ago, according to a key report. The improvement is adding to economic growth, which generally boosts energy consumption and lifts prices.

President Barack Obama will return to Washington Thursday after a brief vacation to resume budget talks with Congress. Negotiations are aimed at avoiding the "fiscal cliff," the deep budget cuts and tax increases that could slow U.S. growth.

While traders and investors kept an eye on the economy and the fiscal cliff, analysts noted that light trading volume around the holidays can mean broad swings in crude prices.

"We've got a very, very thin trade," said Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Ritterbusch and Associates. "It doesn't really take much buying to spike it."

Meanwhile, prices at the pump held steady at a national average of $3.25 a gallon. Gasoline was at its lowest price for the year last Thursday, at an average of $3.22 a gallon.

In London, Brent crude, used to price a various kinds of foreign oil, rose $2.27 to end at $111.07 per barrel.

In other energy futures trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

--Heating oil rose 5 cents to finish at $3.05 a gallon.

--Wholesale gasoline rose 7 cents to end at $2.82 a gallon.

--Natural gas rose 5 cents to finish at $3.39 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Police investigate whether NBC's Gregory violated gun law

Washington police are investigating whether NBC's David Gregory broke the law by holding up what appeared to be a 30-round gun magazine on Sunday's Meet the Press despite being denied permission by police to bring the weaponry on the show.

It is illegal in the district to possess a "large capacity ammunition feeding device."

Gwendolyn Crump, director of the Office of Communications for the Washington Metropolitan Police Department, told ABC News, "NBC contacted MPD inquiring if they could utilize a high capacity magazine for their segment. NBC was informed that possession of a high capacity magazine is not permissible and their request was denied. This matter is currently being investigated."

Another Washington DC police officer and spokesperson Tisha Gant said the situation was "being investigated," but would give no other details including what exactly is under investigation.

A section in the D.C. criminal code says "no person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm." The section stipulates that "the term large capacity ammunition feeding device means a magazine," or similar devices.

Gregory held up what looked like a 30-bullet gun magazine when interviewing the National Rifle Association's executive vice president and CEO Wayne LaPierre on Sunday. Gregory pressed the NRA head on whether fewer children would have been killed during the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting on Dec. 14th if the shooter had access to less ammunition.

Since the interview, conservative media and gun rights activists said that Gregory appeared to have violated the district's gun law. Police subsquently confirmed they were investigating.

NBC News declined to comment through a spokesperson.

ABC News' George Sanchez and Steven Portnoy contributed to this report.

A Guide To Buying The Solar Panels - News and Society

A solar panel is a device that converts light from the sun into usable electricity, the same electricity we use to power our homes, devices, appliances, and even some vehicles. The stronger the solar light is, the more energy can the solar equipment generate. Using solar power comes with many advantages. You can visit www.novaenergy.co.nz/solar-panel for more details.

For instance, if you use your solar heat equipment to power your electric based heating system, you won?t experience any recurring monthly expenses linked to the heating of your home. When you use oil or gas-based heaters, you must pay the gas or oil consumption cost monthly in order to uphold the continuous heating of your home. Check www.novaenergy.co.nz/solar-water-heating out.

Since solar energy is free of charge, you can run your electric based heating or cooling system without experiencing any additional monthly expenses. A lot of people like to use solar power for the reason that it is a clean energy source, and not hurtful to the environment. Some countries, the US included, in fact offer tax incentives and benefits to people who buy solar panels and produce their own electricity!

Now, when buying these heat panels, there are many things to consider. One of the most essential factors is to consider your electrical requirements. Check or estimate the power consumption required for any of the electrical appliances in your home that you?d like to power with your solar heat system. Most people use the energy to heat their water, because a water heater or air conditioner typically consumes a lot of electricity.

Make an inventory of the wattage ratings for any electrical appliances you might want to power with the solar panel, add up all those wattage amounts and that will provide you with an idea about the amount of electricity you are consuming monthly when using those particular devices and appliances. When selecting your panels, select the ones with a slighter higher wattage rating than the amount you calculated from your inventory. This ensures that the panels you will be buying will have enough power production for your appliances.

Considering the desired position for your panels can also have an effect on how much you expend on the purchase. You want your solar equipment to have maximum light exposure during the day. The most favorable placement of a solar panels involves installing them so that they directly face the sun between the hours of 9AM to 3PM, which is when the sun is at its brightest. There are add-ons that can be purchased to help guarantee maximum light compilation by the solar heat system. A solar tracker is an example of this, but it is an additional outlay. Furthermore, because the solar tracker is powered by electricity generated from the panel, the output of your panels will be lessened by its power utilization. After all, you can visit www.novaenergy.co.nz for more solar panels.

Why Robotech is the greatest love story of the 20th century

Why Robotech is the greatest love story of the 20th centuryLiterary types often regard Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita as the greatest love story of the 20th century. They're close, but it's actually the ?80s cartoon series Robotech - specifically, it's the Macross section of Robotech, based on the 1982 anime Super Dimension Fortress Macross, the first of the three Japanese cartoons that were cobbled together and re-edited to make the Robotech cartoon that aired in the US. While so many other children's entertainments were going on and on about true love (or avoiding the subject entirely), the Macross saga helped countless kids understand that love isn't perfect, it isn't good, and most importantly, it's never easy.

Robotech's Macross saga was a romance more than it was a sci-fi adventure, and since it was full of jets that transformed into robots, a giant race of aliens named the Zentraedi, and the giant spaceship called the SDF that had accidentally crash-landed on Earth they would stop at nothing to take, that's saying something. Here are five truths about love that only Robotech had the guts to admit to kids:

Love Knows No Bounds

Macross understands that you love who you love, and there's no class, race, or any kind of status that matters. Lisa Hayes, the second-in-command of the most powerful spaceship in the galaxy (and she's also the most sober commander, she ends up in charge most of the time), loves a lowly pilot recruit. Young Chinese pop star Lynn Minmei loves her cousin Lynn Kyle. Ace pilot Maximillian Sterling loves the beautiful alien Miriya, who's trying to kill him. Even more insanely, veteran pilot Roy Fokker loves Claudia Grant, a - gasp! - person of color. I know it doesn't seem worth congratulating now, but showing an interracial relationship in kids' cartoons in the mid-?80s was simply unheard of, and Robotech had the cajones to never even comment on it in the scripts, portraying it as completely natural. The heart wants what the heart wants, and there's no amount of reality that can sway it.

Why Robotech is the greatest love story of the 20th centuryLove Is Messy

After countless cartoons where the prince gets the princess at the end (or vice versa), Robotech got kids ready for a lifetime of relationships by revealing that love as first sight was a lot more rare than awesome jets that transform into robots. The show basically centers on Rick Hunter's incredibly long, unrequited infatuation with Lynn Minmei, and Lisa Hayes' simultaneous crush on Rick. Both of these take up most of Macross' 36 episodes, forcing viewers to wonder if Rick will ever wake up, drop the mercurial Minmei, and realize that the infinitely more awesome Lisa has the hots for him- or, conversely, if Lisa will ever stop pining over the bastard who keeps ignoring her for the 15-year-old Chinese pop star who treats him like shit. Unrequited love isn't fun, but it's a hell of a lot more likely than some fairy tale ending.

Why Robotech is the greatest love story of the 20th centuryLove Hurts

To clarify the above, Rick doesn't just sit in his bunk pining over over Minmei; no, that's only what he does in-between the times she's leading him on and/or breaking his heart. Minmei does just enough to keep Rick thinking he's got a chance" asking for him along to her concerts, accepting his gifts, giving him kisses on the cheek, and more. Inbetween these moments of happiness are: Minmei ignoring him, Minmei fawning over Lynn Kyle, and Minmei generally breaking his heart. Minmei was the most hated character in anime in the ?80s, and her torture of poor Rick is the reason why; but what we didn't understand is that Minmei wasn't actually trying to be cruel - she genuinely likes Rick, and likes being with him - she just likes someone else. Sure, she's flirty and flighty, but she's a 15-16-year-old girl. Who could reasonably expect her to choose a stable relationship as opposed to the dark, brooding Lynn Kyle? Boys watching Robotech in the ?80s, that's who. But we were wrong.

Moreover, everything Minmei does to Rick? Rick does to Lisa, only worse. At least Minmei's flirty nature gives Rick hope some of the time. Rick makes his feelings for Minmei abundantly clear to Lisa, and she's still so in love she simply waits and hopes he eventually wises up.

Why Robotech is the greatest love story of the 20th century Love Is Gross (Usually If You're Doing It Right)

In one of Robotech's most iconic scenes, Rick, Lisa and fellow pilot Ben Dixon are captured by the giant alien Zentraedi and interrogated. Since the Zentraedi are cloned and immediately bred to be warriors, they have no sense of romance or relationships or sex. As these alien interrogations often do, the subject of love comes up, specifically kissing, and the Zentraedi demand the humans kiss to find out what the hell they're talking about. Lisa kisses Rick (sorry, Ben) and immediately disgusts every Zentraedi watching. They're stunned, appalled, and actually retching at the site of the two humans touching mouths (and potentially tongues) - to the point where they consider the act an actual weapon. Look, if you think there's a better way to slyly hint at the biological messiness of love in a kids' cartoon, you're lying to yourself.

Love Is Dumb

When summarizing the Macross portion of Robotech, one could do worse than trying to describe the show's primary love? er? polygon. The most powerful woman in the galaxy is so in love she washes the underwear of a young pilot who is in love with a 15-year-old Chinese pop star who is in love with her cousin, who throws gin bottles at her. I'm serious. Love makes Lisa Hayes - the second in command of the SDF-1 - actually does Rick Hunter's laundry at his apartment? while he's out chasing Minmei. Minmei has the hots for Lynn Kyle, who gets so mad at her success that he does throw bottles at her (that they're gin bottle is my hypothesis, but I stand by it). And these things don't affect Minmei or Lisa's affections in the least. Oh, they're upset; they wonder what the hell they're doing; but they're still in love. Because love makes us dumb.

Also, Max Sterling asks the alien spy Miriya on a date while she's actually trying to kill him? and they end up having the most solid relationship in the series. Because love is dumb.

Love Is All That Really Matters

But for as dumb, gross, messy and cruel love can be, it's what makes humans human, and it's what holds the crew of the SDF-1 together during their horrific war with the Zentraedi. It what keeps the crew and unwilling residents of the SDF-1 sane during their attempt to travel home, even if that love is returned or not. When the Earth is pretty much annihilated in episode 27, all people have to hold onto is each other, as they try to survive and carve a new civilization out of the ashes. Love isn't a cure-all; it's not going to bring humanity back, and it's not going to conquer everything. But whether you're facing giant aliens in space bent on your annihilation or just everyday life, it's obviously the best thing we've got.

Now, maybe you fell in love with your partner at first sight and were in bliss from that moment on, but if so, you're the exception, not the norm. Most of us will feel the pain of unrequited love, of debasing ourselves for someone who may not deserve it (or even notice), will have our hearts broken, and/or end up in multi-person relationship drama that would make Romeo and Juliet's heads explode (I, for one, have experienced all of these things, multiple times). Lolita might have revealed that love is blind, unquenchable and not always good, but Robotech taught us that and more, and did it in a kids' cartoon to boot. Sorry, Nabokov. Better luck next time.

Lieberman fears country may go over 'fiscal cliff'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Sen. Joe Lieberman says he feels "it's more likely than not" that the country will go over the "fiscal cliff" now that House anti-tax rebels rejected Speaker John Boehner's plan because it would raise rates on million-dollar earners.

Lieberman says going over the cliff "will be the most colossal consequential act of congressional irresponsibility in a long time, maybe ever in American history."

The Connecticut independent tells CNN's "State of the Union" that taxes will go up for most everyone, programs will be cut and the country probably will return to recession.

Lieberman says Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and GOP leader Mitch McConnell "have the ability to put this together again and pass something" although it won't be the "grand bargain" to solve all issues over the long term.

(AP) ? Hawaii residents will bid a final goodbye to the late Sen. Daniel Inouye on Sunday.

Services are scheduled at Honolulu's National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, a strikingly beautiful site located in an extinct volcano and serving as the final resting place to thousands of World War II veterans, including more than 400 members of the storied Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team, of which Inouye was a part. Inouye's first wife, Margaret, is also laid to rest at the site.

Inouye died last Monday of respiratory complications at the age of 88. He was the first Japanese-American elected to both houses of Congress and the second-longest serving senator in U.S. history, at 50 years. He was revered in Hawaii for his ability to bring federal aid and resources home, to help build up this still-young state.

The past week has been marked by tributes and honors for Inouye, with Senate colleagues from both parties, President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and former President Bill Clinton among those offering warm remembrances. Services for Inouye were held both in Washington and in Hawaii. He lay in state at both the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Thursday and the Hawaii state Capitol on Saturday.

A public memorial is planned for Friday on Kauai.

Up to 1,000 people were expected at Sunday's service, including Obama and members of Congress, with speeches by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Sen. Daniel Akaka planned. Akaka served alongside Inouye as a member of Hawaii's congressional delegation for 36 years, 22 of those in the Senate.

A military jet fly-over and a 19-gun cannon salute are also planned.

Nadine Siak, a public affairs specialist at the cemetery, said Sunday's service will be a memorial with plans for a private burial by the family later.

On Saturday night, Inouye was praised as a humble leader who embodied honor, dignity and duty during a public visitation at Hawaii's state Capitol.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie told hundreds of people that Inouye went from being considered undesirable as a Japanese-American at the start of World War II to gaining the respect of the country's leaders in Washington.

"Rest easy, you are at home with us in paradise," Abercrombie said. His remarks toward the end of an hourlong ceremony marked the start of seven hours of public visitation.

Inouye's closed casket, covered with an American flag, was escorted in by seven pallbearers along a red carpet to the center of the Capitol courtyard.

After the ceremony, it was placed in a large tent with the U.S. and Hawaii flags behind it, as people lined up outside to pay their respect, starting with Inouye's wife, Irene Hirano Inouye.

Inouye is just one of several Hawaii icons to lie in state at the Capitol in Honolulu. Sen. Hiram Fong was honored the same way in 2004, as was U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink in 2002 and singer Israel Kamakawiwoole in 1997.

Inouye was a high school senior in Honolulu on Dec. 7, 1941, when he watched dozens of Japanese planes fly toward Pearl Harbor and other Oahu military bases to begin a bombing that changed the course of world events.

He volunteered for a special U.S. Army unit of Japanese-Americans ? including several who attended the Saturday night ceremony. Inouye lost his right arm in a battle with Germans in Italy. That scratched his dream of becoming a surgeon. He went to law school and into politics instead.

He became known as an economic power in his home state as part of the Senate Appropriations Committee, where he steered federal money toward Hawaii to build roads, schools and housing.

Colleagues and aides lined the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol on Thursday to bid aloha to Inouye during a rare ceremony to demonstrate the respect he earned over decades.

He was eulogized by Obama, who arrived early Saturday in Honolulu for his annual Christmas family vacation. The president said during a service at Washington's National Cathedral on Friday that Inouye's presence during the Watergate hearings helped show him what could be possible in his own life.

Visitors began signing condolence books at the governor's office on Friday, with additional books available at the Saturday service.
